Research & Outreach

Tools for transformative learning experiences

At SFA, we believe that there’s more to college than classrooms and lectures. That’s why we emphasize hands-on learning experiences and provide our students with the tools and technology they need to put their skills to use in the real world. As a student in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, you’ll have access to outstanding laboratories and technology, plus opportunities to participate in research and outreach projects that address real-world issues.

Check out some of our amazing resources:

Cutting-edge technology

Students in the College of Forestry and Agriculture have access to world-class laboratories stocked with state-of-the-art technology and equipment, such as:

  • LiDAR remote sensing technology
  • 3-D printing capabilities
  • Global positioning systems
  • Unmanned aerial vehicles (drones)

Living forestry classrooms

Our students have access to more than 12 million acres of forest and water resources and state-of-the-art research laboratories, including:

  • The Natural Resources Conservation Service East Texas Plant Materials Center
  • The SFA National Center for Pharmaceutical Crops
  • The U.S. Forest Service Stephen F. Austin Experimental Forest
  • SFA STMicroelectronics Forests

Legacy forests

The Lumberjack Legacy Forest Program is a win-win for landowners, students and the environment. Through this unique program, College of Forestry and Agriculture students and faculty manage and preserve forested land that has been donated to SFA. Revenue generated from Legacy Forests benefit scholarships, research and academic programs designated by the donor. Students gain valuable hands-on experience in these living laboratories, and landowners can earn tax benefits and ensure that their land is preserved for generations to come.
