SFA orchestra opens season with all-Russian concert

SFA School of Music director to perform 'Pictures at an Exhibition'

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Pianist John Noel Roberts, director of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music, will perform Modeste Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" during his faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

SFA Arboretum to host fall plant sale


The annual Fabulous Fall Festival plant sale at Stephen F. Austin State University 's Mast Arboretum will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at the intramural field on Wilson Drive .

"As usual, a great selection of rare, unusual, native, and Texas-tough trees, shrubs, vines, herbaceous perennials, grasses and groundcovers will be available," said Dawn Stover, Mast Arboretum research associate.

SFA logs another record enrollment


Fall semester enrollment at Stephen F. Austin State University is up approximately 1 percent to 12,954 students, surpassing the all-time enrollment record set one year ago.

The number of SFA students attending classes increased by 109 between fall 2009 and fall 2010. Summer enrollment also rose slightly, increasing 0.4 percent in summer I and 2.6 percent in summer II. The fall SFA headcount marks the 11th consecutive reporting period with an enrollment increase.

Cemetery interpretation workshops and lecture set for October


Nancy Adgent, an independent scholar specializing in cemetery studies, will present two area workshops and a lecture in early October as part of the Preserve America cemetery interpretation project.

SFA to present clarinet-piano duo


Dr. Christopher Ayer, SFA professor of clarinet, and Dr. Kae Hosoda-Ayer, lecturer in collaborative piano at Baylor University, will perform as Duo Karudan at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. The recital is a part of the SFA School of Music's Cole Performing Arts Series.

Unique trombone/percussion duo to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present a free concert by the Brian Allen and Hernan Hecht Duo Monday, September 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall of the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

Allen, who writes his own music, is one of the world's greatest trombonists, according to Dr. Deb Scott, SFA associate professor of trombone. He and percussionist Hecht perform regularly in Mexico and the United States, and are currently touring Texas as they promote their new album, "Dr. Hueipi."

German art historian to speak at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - "Art in Germany since the 1990 Political (Re)unification" will be the topic of a free public lecture to be given by Dr. Christoff Zuschlag at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, in Room 142 of the Liberal Arts North Building on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

The lecture is a joint presentation of the SFA School of Art and Department of Modern Languages.

Zuschlag, who is a professor of art history at Koblenz-Landau University, will first give a brief historical outline of what occurred in the art world in the two Germanys after 1945.

SFA to stage student-directed 'The Other Son'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS -The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present a student-directed production of Luigi Pirandello's "The Other Son" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25. All performances are in the Downstage Theatre located on the first floor of the Griffith Fine Arts Building.

'Fired Up' opens for viewing at SFA


"Offering #5," a porcelain work by Barbara Frey, will be included in "Fired Up: Three Regional Artists Take a Contemporary Look at Clay," which opens for viewing in SFA's Griffith Gallery on Friday, Sept. 24, and runs through Friday, Nov. 12.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The works of three ceramicists from nearby universities will be available for viewing beginning Friday, Sept. 24, in Stephen F. Austin State University's Griffith Gallery.
