SFA Wind Ensemble to perform ‘The Music of Omar Thomas’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Wind Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “The Music of Omar Thomas” for its first concert of the 2023-24 academic year. The program will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in Turner Auditorium inside the newly renovated Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus.
 

SFA voice professor Turner to present collaborative recital


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Dr. Chris Turner, assistant professor of voice at Stephen F. Austin State University, will be joined by colleagues to present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
 
Turner will perform with Robert Boren, voice professor at Tyler Junior College, and Maggie Hinchliffe, collaborative pianist at SFA.
 

Kenari Quartet to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Kenari Quartet will present a recital that members state will range in repertoire from “heartfelt to adventurous” when the saxophone ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in Cole Concert Hall on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.
 
The Kenari Quartet includes soprano saxophonist Dr. Bob Eason; alto saxophonist Kyle Baldwin; tenor saxophonist Corey Dundee; and baritone saxophonist Steven Banks.
 

Hicks’ ‘Notes for String Theory’ series to show in Fort Worth


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A solo exhibition of works by Candace Hicks, associate professor of art in the School of Art at Stephen F. Austin State University, will open the first week in October in the Transystem Gallery at Arts Fort Worth.

Hicks’ exhibition features work from her series “Notes for String Theory.”

SFA Department of Earth Sciences and Geologic Resources to celebrate Earth Science Day


Nacogdoches, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Earth Sciences and Geologic Resources will host an Earth Science Day event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Cole STEM Building Atrium.

SFA to present student-directed ‘A Cheever Evening’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre and Dance will present the student-directed one-act play “A Cheever Evening” by A.R. Gurney, based on the stories of John Cheever, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, in the new Black Box Theater in the Griffith Fine Arts Building, SFA campus.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Plans are being finalized for the annual 12 X 12 Scholarship Fundraiser hosted by the Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University and benefiting students in the SFA School of Art.
 
Mark your calendars for Oct. 7 through 21 to make sure you have time to participate in silent bidding, and plan to attend the art party and art auction from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.
 

‘Cinderella’ opens 2023-24 children’s series at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Children’s Performing Arts Series at Stephen F. Austin State University will open its 2023-24 season with a touring musical of the childhood favorite “Cinderella” on Thursday, Oct. 19, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.
 
Bullied by her two mean stepsisters, Cinderella’s future looks bleak until her Fairy Godmother casts a spell and sends her to the ball. How will the Prince ever find her when she flees at midnight, leaving behind a single glass slipper?
 

SFA filmmaking program to premiere ‘CUT!’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and SFA’s filmmaking program will premiere its summer film project, “CUT!,” at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, in Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.
 

Singer-songwriter Ruthie Foster to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The first event in the return of the University Series at Stephen F. Austin State University will be a performance by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Ruthie Foster at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in the newly renovated Turner Auditorium in Griffith Fine Arts Building.
