SFA’s education college joins national organization for educator preparation


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s James I. Perkins College of Education has joined the University-School Partnerships for the Renewal of Educator Preparation Coalition, a national organization dedicated to supporting educator preparation programs to meet the needs of future pre-K-12 students. 

SFA social work students help organize fundraising event to benefit local food pantry


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Graduate students in Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Social Work have helped prep for and promote the fundraising event “Christmas in July for H.O.P.E,” which invites the community to restock and support the food pantry, Nacogdoches H.O.P.E., or Helping Other People Eat.

SFA’s University Police Department officers receive dual commission with UT System ahead of system affiliation


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Officers of Stephen F. Austin State University’s police department received a dual commission with The University of Texas System’s police force during a ceremony Monday on the SFA campus.

The University Police Department officers became jointly commissioned as both SFA and UT System officers, which will hold until Sept. 1 when SFA officially becomes a member of the UT System. At that time, UPD officers will be commissioned only with the system, though their primary role will remain serving the SFA campus.

SFA lecturer starts foundation to assist local law enforcement


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A group of citizens aiming to support local law enforcement, including Stephen F. Austin State University’s police department, have banded together to create the Nacogdoches Law Enforcement Foundation. 
 
Korey Kahler, lecturer of computer science at SFA, said the idea to create this nonprofit came after an opportunity to help a family who suffered a loss in 2021.
 

SFA’s Friday Night Film Series: ‘Deep in the Heart’ celebrates what makes Texas unique


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of “Deep in the Heart,” a visually stunning celebration of what makes Texas unique. The screening is at 7 p.m. Friday, July 7, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.
 

Gardening social media influencer to be SFA Gardens’ July lecture series speaker


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. July 13 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.
 
Rosanne Green, gardening social media influencer, will present “Raising the next generation of horticulturalists, entomologists and master gardeners.”

SFA students go abroad to explore businesses in Portugal


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Twenty students from Stephen F. Austin State University’s Rusche College of Business traveled to Portugal May 15 through 25 to explore businesses and unique sites in the country. They included a company that has made hand-painted tile the same way for 400 years, a small shoemaker who produces shoes by hand with 30 employees, and the largest producer of cork products in the world.

Texas author to visit Lufkin and Nacogdoches as part of SFA’s English language learners grant


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Project Raíces, a grant-funded bilingual outreach and education program administered by faculty members from Stephen F. Austin State University’s James I. Perkins College of Education, will host two back to school bashes and a Lucha Libre Night, all featuring children’s author Xavier Garza, on Aug. 12 in both Lufkin and Nacogdoches.
