Handley brings experience, lifelong love of art to Nacogdoches


John Handley, the new art galleries director for Stephen F. Austin State University's School of Art, brings a wealth of experience to the job.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - John Handley grew up in a family of artists - musicians especially.

"But my mother was, and is, a painter, so I was painting at a very early age," he said.

Student-directed 'Tunnel of Love' featured in SFA's Downstage Theatre


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present a student production of Jacquelyn Reingold's "Tunnel of Love" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3. All performances are in the Downstage Theatre, located on the first floor of the Griffith Fine Arts Building.

The one-act play, directed by Emory junior Vanessa Hendricks, is "a bizarre comedy about Susie, her boyfriend and a special problem," according to Hendricks.

SFA's First Friday Film Series features "Waste Land"


Photographer Vic Muniz is shown at Jardim Gramacho, Rio de Janeiro's metropolitan landfill, which receives more trash daily than any landfill in the world. Muniz's photographs of pickers of recyclables here is the subject of the documentary film "Waste Land," which will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov.

Madrigal Singers to present concert


The SFA Madrigal Singers will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in Cole Concert Hall.

"Well-Tempered Keyboards" features percussionist Robert Crutchfield and pianist Dr. Maria Guénette in a performance at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Train depot exhibit to feature accidents, derailments


An exhibit regarding train accidents is being hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University's Center for Regional Heritage Research at the Nacogdoches Historic Depot through Nov. 16.

SFA Music Preparatory Division sponsors middle school choir clinic


Nita Hudson, clinician for the Region 21 Middle School All-Region Choir Clinic held recently on the SFA campus, leads participating students in vocal exercises. A voice lecturer in the SFA School of Music, Hudson and other clinicians and accompanists donated their time to teach the students their UIL all-region competition music.

SFA conference to highlight U.S., Middle East relationships


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Global leadership changes and their potential impacts on the Texas economy will be discussed during a conference titled "The U.S. and Middle East: The Future Relationship" Oct. 18-19 at the Magnolia Hotel in Houston.

The conference is hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University, the Center for International Studies at the University of St. Thomas, the Egyptian Consulate of Houston, and the Consulate General of Israel to the Southwest.
