El Camino Real education workshops to be held in Texas, Louisiana

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stone Fort Museum at Stephen F. Austin State University will offer two June workshops exploring the cultural history of El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail.

The workshops will be held June 7-8 in Natchitoches, La., and June 14-15 in Victoria.

SFA accounting professor receives service-learning award


Dr. George L. Hunt, assistant professor of accounting at Stephen F. Austin State University, received the 2012 Teaching Excellence Award for Service Learning on Wednesday, April 18th.

Nacogdoches early childhood learning centers plan celebration


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Early Childhood Lab at Stephen F. Austin State University and the Greater East Texas Community Action Program Head Start are hosting events to celebrate the Week of the Young Child April 23-27. The Week of the Young Child is time to recognize the importance of early learning for all young children, according to Lori Harkness, director of the Early Childhood Lab.

Plaza at football stadium named in honor of James Campbell


The Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents named the James Campbell Plaza at Homer Bryce Stadium near the athletic field house in honor of Campbell's dedication and devotion to SFA. He is a former member of both the SFA Alumni Association and Alumni Foundation boards of directors.

Childs named dean of SFA College of Sciences and Mathematics


Dr. Kimberly Childs named new dean of Stephen F. Austin's College of Sciences and Mathematics.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Following a national search, Dr. Kimberly Childs was named dean of Stephen F. Austin State University's College of Sciences and Mathematics by the Board of Regents Tuesday.

SFA jazz concert offers range of styles


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The two jazz bands at Stephen F. Austin State University, the Swingin' Axes and the Swingin' Aces, will present a program of contemporary and classical jazz, swing, Latin and funk during their final concert of the season at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

Under the direction of SFA Associate Professor of trombone Deb Scott, the Aces will open the concert with Frank Mantooth's ballad "Whispered Elegy," Matt Catingub's fast swing tune "Blues and the Abscessed Tooth" and a Latin tune by Denis DiBlasio, "Jalapeno Dreams."

SFA Wind Ensemble offers 'surround sound' with 'Circus Maximus'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Fred J. Allen, director of bands at Stephen F. Austin State University, describes the upcoming Wind Ensemble concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, as "the largest thing we have ever put together." The highlight of the program will be John Corigliano's "Circus Maximus," during which audience members literally will be surrounded by musicians.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The inspiration for the Orchestra of the Pines' season-closing concert, "Spanish Nights," occurred many years ago when music director Gene H. Moon watched a video of the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's concert of the same title.

SFA festival of plays opens Tuesday
