East Texas Historical Association to present annual Lale Lecture Oct. 2


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Dr. Paul H. Carlson, Texas Tech University professor emeritus of history, will discuss the importance of a humanities education in a modern global world at the 18th Georgiana and Max S. Lale Lecture presented by the East Texas Historical Association.

SFA to host fourth annual global citizenship event


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The future of the relationship between the United States and Asia will be featured at the 2014 Global Citizenship Series presented by Stephen F. Austin State University on Oct. 9 and 10 at the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square, 16090 City Walk.

The conference, titled "Asia and the United States: Relationship Patterns and Potential," is the fourth annual international conference SFA has hosted in the Houston area.

SFA jazz bands' performances to feature works of music greats Basie, Sturm


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the university's jazz bands, the Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

In the first concert of the year, the Swingin's Axes will "take on an exciting project - a live production of Count Basie's 1968 hit album, 'Basie - Straight Ahead,'" according to Gary Wurtz, professor of trumpet and jazz studies at SFA and director of the Swingin' Axes.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Deb Scott, professor of trombone at SFA, in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Scott's performance, part of the Cole Performing Arts Series, will feature varying music styles, randing from a Baroque suite of dances to a jazz composition.

Nacogdoches Railroad Depot to display photography and poetry exhibit


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Center for Regional Heritage Research at Stephen F. Austin State University will host the exhibit "Pineywoods Summer Haiku" starting at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Nacogdoches Historic Depot, 101 Old Tyler Road.

The exhibit, which celebrates the natural heritage of Nacogdoches and the beautiful Piney Woods of East Texas, was created by Dr. Judith Lauter, poet and former director of SFA's Human Neuroscience Laboratory.

SFA Gardens to host 'Solar Saturday' in conjunction with Fabulous Fall Festival Plant Sale


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University will host "Solar Saturday" in conjunction with its annual Fabulous Fall Festival Plant Sale on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St.

"Solar Saturday" will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a dedication ceremony celebrating the solar array installation on the roof of the recently opened Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building in the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

SFA to screen 'Muscle Shoals' documentary at Cole Art Center


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of "Muscle Shoals" at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Directed by Greg "Freddy" Camalier and released by Magnolia Pictures, "Muscle Shoals" is the true story of a small town with a big sound and an even bigger influence on the music industry.

Clarinetist Qian to perform mix of traditional, contemporary music

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Dr. Jun Qian in a guest clarinet recital at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus as part of the Cole Performing Arts Series.
