SFA making opera accessible for students, audiences


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The elaborate opera houses in metropolitan cities aren't the only places to experience the beautiful sounds and scenery of a full-scale opera production.

Each spring, Stephen F. Austin State University voice students have the opportunity to perform in an opera on W.M. Turner Auditorium stage on campus, and East Texas audiences have the opportunity to see and hear "beautiful young people with beautiful voices perform," according to Dr. Deborah Dalton, professor of voice at SFA and the opera's director.

SFA ranked among best schools for a master's degree in special education online


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University has been ranked 14th among the 30 best schools for a master's degree in special education online by Best Choice Schools, one of the leading free websites for helping college students and adult learners choose the best education path. The ranking was published on the organization's website in January.

SFA's Nelson Rusche College of Business to host College to Career Conference


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's Nelson Rusche College of Business will host its third College to Career Conference from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in the Mattress Firm Commons in the R.E. McGee Building on the SFA campus.

C2C, a professional development event, will feature sessions throughout the day with speakers from across the state representing companies such as Southwest Airlines, Mattress Firm, Edward Jones and Wells Fargo.

SFA interior design students help remodel The Fredonia Hotel


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Thirteen Stephen F. Austin State University interior design students are leaving their mark on Nacogdoches in a big way.

This semester, students enrolled in SFA interior design associate professor Sally Ann Swearingen's senior capstone course have been working with Richard and Barbara DeWitt, the new owners of The Fredonia Hotel, and hotel management in their remodeling efforts.

SFA's Contemporary Guitar Ensemble to perform Hendrix music


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Contemporary Guitar Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform the music of American rock guitarist, singer and songwriter Jimi Hendrix in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

SFA's University Series to feature Texas soprano Pine in concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The College of Fine Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University will present soprano Ava Pine in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14, in W.M. Turner Auditorium as part of the 2015-2016 University Series.

A native of Texas, Pine continues to dazzle audiences and critics with her rewarding vocalism and compelling commitment to character, creating vivid and captivating portraits on stage, according to Dr. John W. Goodall, associate dean of the College of Fine Arts and director of the series.

SFA Wind Ensemble to perform compositions dedicated to light, shadow


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Wind Ensemble will present the concert "Luminosity: Tributes to Light and Shadow" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

Featured on the concert will be the music of composers Steven Bryant, Darius Milhaud, Joseph Schwantner and Alexander Scriabin, who was famous for his study of the relationship between light, color and sound, according to Dr. David Campo, associate director of bands at SFA and the ensemble's conductor.

SFA's Children's Performing Arts Series to present 'Rumpelstiltskin'


NACOGDOCHES, Texas -The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and the Children's Performing Arts Series will present two performances of "Rumpelstiltskin" on Friday, April 15.

Presented by The Panto Company USA, "Rumpelstiltskin" targets children in prekindergarten through third grade, according to Diane J. Peterson, Fine Arts Box Office manager and director of the children's series.

"The Panto Company USA spins this classic tale into a golden show for children of all ages, filled with songs and amazing audience participation," she said.

SFA's Trombone Choir to present all-jazz program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Trombone Choir at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 14, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The concert will feature the choir performing an all-jazz program accompanied by rhythm section, according to Dr. Deb Scott, professor of trombone in the SFA School of Music and the choir's director.
