Admissions process
The theatre program participates in rolling admissions, meaning there is no application deadline and incoming first-year and transfer students may apply submitted any time throughout the year. As part of the application process, you'll visit with theatre faculty to showcase your abilities and accomplishments. The method in which this is done will be dependent on your intended course of study:
- Auditions: actors
- Interviews: academic and teacher certification preparation
- Portfolio Review: designers, technicians and stage managers
Admission decisions also are communicated on a rolling basis with one of the following responses:
- acceptance as a theatre major with a scholarship from the School of Theatre and Dance
- acceptance as a theatre major with no scholarship from the School of Theatre and Dance
- provisional acceptance
- or non-acceptance as a theatre major (students admitted to the university may choose a different major).
Final acceptance into the School of Theatre and Dance is contingent upon successful admission to SFA.

Your first step toward applying to the program is to submit the following required documents to the School of Theatre and Dance administrative office:

- and a current photograph of yourself.
Showcase your abilities and accomplishments

Actors
Submit a prepared audition showing your range and ability. Include two contrasting selections limited to a total of three minutes or less.

and - One monologue (contemporary or classical) not to exceed one minute.
Total package cannot exceed three minutes. Packages will be timed. Your slate is not included in that time.
Additionally, a music theory placement exam is also required. This can either be taken on campus at the time of your audition or through an online option.
If you have a dance reel, that is also highly encouraged to submit alongside this package as supplemental material.
Note: Anyone auditioning for the BFA in musical theatre who does not audition for the Musical Theatre program coordinator, Zeke Bocklage, should send their materials to Sheri.GrantFenton@sfasu.edu. She will forward materials to him and other relevant faculty members.
Teacher certification preparation
Be prepared to discuss academic accomplishments and areas of interest in research. You may present a performance audition or portfolio based on area of interest. Students who express an interest in teaching will have opportunities to meet with faculty in this area of study.
