Exemption applies to tuition and laboratory fees.

Eligibility

Eligible students are those who:

  • are employed as a paid firefighter by a political subdivision of the State of Texas or active member of a volunteer fire department
  • holds an accredited advanced certification (or the equivalent) under the State Firefighter's and Fire Marshal's Association of Texas volunteer certification program or a Phase V (Firefighter II) certification (or the equivalent) under the Texas Commission of Fire Protection's voluntary certification program under § 419.071, Gov't Code.
  • enrolls in courses offered as part of a fire science curriculum
  • and enroll in classes for which SFA receives tax support (for example, a course that doesn't depend solely on student tuition and fees to cover its costs).

Continuation requirements

If on the completion of any semester or term you fail to meet the GPA requirements described in SFA's policy regarding eligibility for financial aid or have reached the excessive hour rule limits, you may not receive the exemption for the next semester or term in which you enroll.

How to apply

Upload proof of employment letter as a paid firefighter using the directions below. When prompted, select "Firefighters."

  1. Using your mySFA credentials to log in, visit the document upload page.
  2. Select the appropriate option from the drop-down menu.
  3. Upload the documentation.
