Earning credit for a failed course

Credit can only be earned by repeating the course. The HOP policy 02-206 (PDF) includes details regarding grades for repeated courses.

To improve your GPA calculation:

Undergraduate students who want to repeat courses to improve their GPA at SFA must repeat those courses at SFA. For any course that is repeated at SFA, the grade earned in the most recent enrollment will be used to calculate the GPA.

To meet graduation requirement only:

Credit hours for courses taken at other institutions to replace credit hours earned at SFA may be used to meet graduation credit-hour requirements, but do not impact your GPA calculation.

Academic standing and your GPA:

Read HOP policy 04-109 (PDF) for full details regarding undergraduate academic standing and your GPA.

The following is an example of a possible situation concerning academic standing and GPA:

In fall 2019, Student A registered for the three-credit-hour course ENGL 1301 and received an F grade. At the end of fall 2019, the F hours were included in the student’s GPA calculation of 1.8. This GPA caused Student A to be placed on academic probation for fall 2019.

During spring 2020, Student A repeated ENGL 1301 and received a C grade. At the end of spring 2020, after grades were entered and the repeat policy applied, the student's GPA calculation rose to 2.0. Additionally, this improved the student's academic standing, avoiding academic suspension.

Academic Standing

A student must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 to remain in good academic standing. Refer to HOP policy 04-102 (PDF) for details on academic probation, suspension and eligibility for reinstatement.

Undergraduate students: Summer term is an opportunity to improve your GPA and your academic standing. If your summer term GPA is below 2.0, you will not be placed on academic suspension. Instead, your academic standing will be carried over from the spring term.

Academic standing response to COVID-19: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, SFA suspended academic standing penalties during the spring, summer and fall 2020 terms for undergraduate, graduate and doctorate students. The HOP policy 04-102 (PDF) was reinstated spring 2021.
