GPA calculators are designed to provide an estimated GPA based on the information you enter and do not include transferred or repeated courses.

Your unofficial transcript will reflect updated term and cumulative GPAs once end-of-term processing is complete.

How to manually calculate GPA

  1. List each course in which you're registered.
  2. List appropriate credit hours for each course.
    • Calculate the sum of these credit hours (your total quality hours, QHRS)
  3. List the letter grade you anticipate earning for each course.
  4. Multiply row of QHRS (step 2, above) by the anticipated letter grade's quality points:
    • A = 4
    • B = 3
    • C = 2
    • D = 1
    • F = 0
  5. Calculate the sum of these quality points (your total quality points, QPTS)
  6. Divide your QPTS by your QHRS.

This is your estimated GPA.

Visual example:

Course QHRS Grades QPTS GPA
SFAS 1011 1 A 4
ENGL 1301 3 B 9
GOVT 2305 3 B 9
MATH 1314 3 D 3
KINE 2100 1 C 2
  11 ÷ 27 = 2.455

Academic Standing

A student must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 to remain in good academic standing. Refer to university policy 6.4 (PDF) for details on academic probation, suspension and eligibility for reinstatement.

Undergraduate students: Summer term is an opportunity to improve your GPA and your academic standing. If your summer term GPA is below 2.0, you will not be placed on academic suspension. Instead, your academic standing will be carried over from the spring term.

Academic standing response to COVID-19:

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, SFA suspended academic standing penalties during the spring, summer and fall 2020 terms for undergraduate, graduate and doctorate students. The university policy 6.4 (PDF) was reinstated spring 2021.
