SFA’s Rusche College of Business names Dr. Marcus Cox coordinator of Business and Community Services


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Marcus Cox, associate professor of management in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Rusche College of Business, has been named coordinator for Business and Community Services, a new entity launched by the college to assist local and regional businesses, nonprofits and government entities with business-related activities.

SFA reports fall 2022 enrollment numbers


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — More students are graduating sooner, and more first-year students are persisting in their studies, according to Stephen F. Austin State University’s fall 2022 enrollment numbers and success reports.

Even with a decrease in overall enrollment, the university saw growth among several populations and achieved its highest six-year graduation rate in the university’s history.

Cho to present music of Scriabin in SFA concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The School of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University will present guest pianist Sung-Soo Cho in a recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Cho will present “Alexander Scriabin's 150th: The Complete Études for Piano.”

“I first learned about the half (Op. 8) several years ago, and learned the rest of them in the following years,” Cho said. “I first presented them in their entirety at the beginning of the pandemic, and when I could first bring them back, it is the composer’s 150th year!”

77th U.S. Army Band members to perform trombone, marimba concert at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Works for trombone and marimba will be featured in a guest recital performed by two members of the 77th U.S. Army Band at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

Staff Sgt. Adam Walton, marimba, and Sgt. Jonathan Stoby, trombone, will perform works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Andrew Beall, Johannes Brahms, Alexandre Guilmant, Franz Schubert and Georg Philipp Telemann in the concert presented by the SFA School of Music.

‘Oskar’s Not So Simple Comeback’ to open SFA’s children’s series


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Children’s Performing Arts Series at Stephen F. Austin State University will open its 2022-23 season on Thursday, Oct. 6, with three performances of Alley Theatre’s “Oskar’s Not So Simple Comeback.”

SFA’s jazz bands to present ‘Swingin’ At The Brewery’ fundraiser


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces jazz bands at Stephen F. Austin State University will present their fall “Swingin’ At The Brewery” fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at Fredonia Brewery in downtown Nacogdoches.

Admission to the outdoor concert is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit the SFA School of Music’s jazz program, according to Dr. J.D. Salas, professor of tuba and euphonium studies and director of the Swingin’ Axes.

SFA Showcase Preview to give prospective students and families a snapshot of college life


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — College-bound students and their families are invited to Stephen F. Austin State University’s Showcase Preview, a weekday open-house event to be held Oct. 10.

“We’ve designed our Showcase SFA events to give attendees an up-close and personal look at everything our campus has to offer,” said Emily Jefferson, SFA director of undergraduate recruitment. “The college search process can be intense, and SFA provides events like Showcase Preview for prospective students and their families to experience our campus in really unique ways.”

SFA researchers contribute to global pollinator data set


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Dr. Reuber Antoniazzi, visiting professor of forest wildlife management, and SFA forestry doctoral student Tatiana Suarez Joaqui joined an impromptu cohort of more than 70 ecologists from across the globe to assemble a critical data set of pollinator and plant interactions in the safety of their own backyard during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. 

Duo Karudan to perform music by living American composers


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University’s Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Duo Karudan performing a program that features works by living American composers at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26,  in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Duo Karudan features the husband-and-wife team of SFA clarinetist Dr. Christopher Ayer, professor, and Baylor University pianist Dr. Kae Hosoda-Ayer, associate professor of piano and director of collaborative piano.

SFA alumna Salli to present saxophone recital


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Alumna Claire Salli will return to her alma mater to present a saxophone recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in Cole Concert Hall on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

Salli, who earned a Bachelor of Music Education in 2017, will present “The Unaccompanied Saxophone,” which features music for soprano, alto and baritone saxophone with no piano accompaniment, or other instrument, in a concert designed to “explore the unique capabilities of the saxophone including different styles, dynamics, range and extended techniques,” she said.
