SFA announces recipients of 2023 Center for Applied Research and Rural Innovation grants


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University has announced the 2023 recipients of grants issued through its Center for Applied Research and Rural Innovation.

The center’s steering committee selected nine proposals with awards totaling more than $280,000. Now in its second year, the CARRI grant program is part of SFA’s effort to support innovation and entrepreneurship in the university’s 12-county coverage region. 

SFA students, faculty and alumni earn honors at international management conference


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Students in Stephen F. Austin State University’s chapter of the Society for Advancement of Management received several awards in March at the first in-person SAM International Business Conference since the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the conference in Nashville, Tennessee, students from around the world competed in categories ranging from business pitch and extemporaneous speech to a case competition. 

SFA students explore banking careers, receive industry insights


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Local banking experts discussed the variety, flexibility and security offered by the banking industry with Stephen F. Austin State University students in the Rusche College of Business at a recent career exploration day. They also stressed the industry’s focus on giving back to the community through serving, advising and lending.

SFA Elliott College of Fine Arts Dean’s Circle announces 2023 award recipients


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts Dean’s Circle at Stephen F. Austin State University will recognize six students during the presentation of the annual Dean’s Awards at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 28, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.
 

SFA Symphony Orchestra to present ‘From the New World’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Symphony Orchestra at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” when the ensemble performs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
 
The program pays homage to America as its connecting feature, according to Dr. Gregory Grabowski, director of orchestral activities at SFA and the orchestra’s director.
 

SFA ranks better in key areas, on par with national numbers overall in recent health assessment survey


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The self-reported overall health and wellness of the student body at Stephen F. Austin State University is largely on par with national averages and better than average in key areas related to drug and alcohol use, according to the results of a recent survey. 

The National College Health Assessment survey, which is administered by the American College Health Association, is the gold standard for higher education health assessments, according to Dr. Andrew Dies, SFA’s associate vice president of student affairs and dean of students.

SFA Wind Symphony to present ‘Dusk to Dawn’ concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Dr. Dan Haddad, associate director of bands at Stephen F. Austin State University, will conduct the Wind Symphony in its presentation of “Dusk to Dawn” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 24, in the Grand Ballroom of the Baker Pattillo Student Center on the SFA campus.
 
“Selected pieces touch on dark and light themes, whether literally, emotionally or metaphysically,” Haddad said.
 

SFA students to host fifth annual Spring Plant Fair on campus featuring summer annuals


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s horticulture program will host their fifth annual Spring Plant Fair from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at the SFA Plantery located at 1924 Wilson Drive. 

Plants available for purchase include a variety of summer annuals like coleus, vinca, ornamental sweet potato, summer snapdragon, wishbone flower and more. All grow well in the East Texas area.  

Louisiana state extension specialist to be SFA Gardens’ May lecture series speaker


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. May 11 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

Heather Kirk-Ballard, an assistant professor and state extension specialist for consumer horticulture at the Louisiana State University AgCenter, will present “Tips and Tricks for Maximizing Sustainable Space in Your Garden.”

SFA’s Model EU team earns Best Delegation honors at the Midwest Model European Union competition


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s Model European Union team, which consists of nine political science majors and one international business major, earned Best Delegation honors at the Midwest Model European Union competition for the second year in a row.
