Saturday event at SFA


Families work together to learn about camping cook-stove options.

An event at Stephen F. Austin State University's Pineywoods Native Plant Center on Jan. 9 will offer visitors an opportunity to cook a delicious camp-stove breakfast, learn about fire safety, and contribute to a bottomland hardwood wetlands restoration project by planting trees along the trails near the center.

Registration open for SFA Music Preparatory Division classes


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Registrations are now being accepted for the spring classes offered through the Stephen F. Austin State University Music Preparatory Division.

Students, including adults, may register for weekly private lessons in voice, harp, piano, classical guitar, rock guitar, violin, Suzuki violin, viola, cello, bass, percussion and other requested instruments. The 16-week classes, taught by upper-level music preparatory faculty, begin the week of Jan. 11, and the 12-week classes, taught by SFA student instructors, begin the week of Feb. 8.

SFA Kindermusik registration open


NACOGDOCHES - Parents of newborns through 7-year-olds can register their children for Kindermusik classes offered by the Stephen F. Austin State University Music Preparatory Division that will begin the week of Feb. 1.

Karen Greer and Erin Tang, certified and licensed Kindermusik teachers, will offer four different age-appropriate classes in which parents and children will play, learn, sing, dance, create and share in the fun of making music together, said Pat Barnett, director of the Music Preparatory Division.

SFA names new vice president for development


Sid Walker, former director of Stephen F. Austin State University's first-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign, has been named vice president for development at the university.

Walker worked at SFA from 1997 to 2000 and was successful at securing commitments of more than $40 million for the campaign. He currently serves as associate vice chancellor for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and will begin his new duties at SFA on Jan. 4.

Tickets to Liverpool Legends make unique gift


The SFA College of Fine Arts suggests tickets to Liverpool Legends, the "Ultimate Beatles Tribute Show," as a unique holiday gift. The group will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, in W.M. Turner Auditorium as part of the SFA College of Fine Arts' University Series.

SFA to host free cyber security training events


Learn how to protect yourself and your community from cyber attacks as Stephen F. Austin State University hosts two training events geared to teach individuals and businesses the importance of cyber security. The two-part lecture will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 11, and 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 12, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center, Regents Suite A.

SFA art galleries closed for portion of break


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, Stephen F. Austin State University's art gallery located in downtown Nacogdoches, will be closed for a portion of the university's semester break.

The Art Center will be open as usual from 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 22, and Wednesday, Dec. 23, and again on Tuesday, Dec. 29, and Wednesday, Dec. 30. It will reopen for regular hours on Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Sen. Hegar to speak at SFA commencement


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Sen. Glenn Hegar of Katy, the youngest member of the Texas Senate, will be the speaker for the commencement ceremony at Stephen F. Austin State University on Saturday, Dec. 19.

'Amahl and the Night Visitors' coming to Lufkin, Longview and Nacogdoches


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music and Opera East Texas will be presenting Gian Carlo Menotti's "Amahl and the Night Visitors" in three East Texas locations during the third weekend in December.

The one-act opera, written in English, will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at the First United Methodist Church in Lufkin, 805 E. Denman Ave; at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, in the Pine Tree High School Auditorium in Longview, 900 Northwest Dr.; and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 20, at Grace Bible Church in Nacogdoches, 315 Hayter St.
