Williams named SFA Regents Professor


Dr. Hans Williams, professor of forestry and associate dean of the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture at Stephen F. Austin State University, has been named Regents Professor for the 2010-11 academic year.

The SFA Board of regents names one Regents Professor each spring. The honored faculty members each receive a medal and a $2,000 grant to support their research efforts.

SFA Spirit Teams excel in national competition


The large co-ed cheerleading squad at Stephen F. Austin State University secured their 11th first-place victory in the division I National Cheerleaders Association championship this month in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The SFA pom squad and the small co-ed team each placed third in the division I competition. This year marks the 18th national victory overall for the SFA spirit program.

"We've had a remarkable run, putting us on par with the top athletic teams in the nation," said Michael Preston, director of student affairs and adviser of SFA spirit programs.

Preserve America Workshop to demonstrate grave marker maintenance


A Preserve America Workshop on the maintenance and cleaning of grave markers presented by Jason Church will be held Friday, April 30, with a presentation will be held at the J.R. Huffman Public Library in Hemphill from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by a demonstration at the Gasby New Zion Cemetery from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

World Renowned Jazz Trombonist Conrad Herwig

World renowned jazz trombonist Conrad Herwig will be the featured guest artist during a joint concert of the Stephen F. Austin State University jazz bands, the Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces, on Thursday, April 29, in W.M. Turner Auditorium. The three-time Grammy-nominated trombonist and the Swingin' Axes will perform works by Coltrane, George Gershwin and Charles Minus, including some of Herwig's own arrangements.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - East Texans have the rare opportunity to get a preview of three playwrights' newest works during Stephen F. Austin State University's Festival of New American Plays Tuesday, April 27, through Saturday, May 1, in the Downstage Theatre of the Griffith Fine Arts Building.

SFA Wind Symphony concert also features choirs


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The program for "With Wind and Song," a concert by the Stephen F. Austin State University's Wind Symphony, on Monday, April 26, will feature compositions for band and chorus. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

Joining the band to present Aaron Copland's "Old American Songs (Set II)" will be SFA's Choral Union and Women's Choir. David Howard, SFA associate director of choirs, will guest conduct the piece that was originally written for voice and piano.

SFA bands to present joint concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Symphonic and University Bands in a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, in W.M. Turner Auditorium. The program includes a wide range of musical works for bands, including marches, tributes to America and contemporary pieces.
