SFA to host Showcase Saturday for prospective students


Stephen F. Austin State University will host Showcase Saturday, an open-house event for prospective students, on Feb. 23 and April 6.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Future college students will have the opportunity to experience a taste of campus life during two free, action-packed open-house Saturdays at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches on Feb. 23 and April 6.

Cole Performing Arts Series features SFA's talented music faculty


NACOGDOCHES - Stephen F. Austin State University music faculty members Jeremy Fain, Geneva Fung and J.D. Salas will present recitals in February as part of the SFA School of Music's Cole Performing Arts Series.

Bassoonist Fain will present an evening of music by his favorite composers at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, in Cole Concert Hall. Among the pieces he will perform are "Recit, Sicilienne, et Rondo" by Eugene Bozza, "Five Pieces in Folk Style" by Robert Schumann, "Rhapsody for Bassoon" by Wilson Osborne and "Trio for Oboe, Piano and Bassoon" by Michael Head.

Nacogdoches Naturally plans day trip to Ragtown Recreation Area


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Join Nacogdoches Naturally on Saturday, Feb. 9, for a day trip to Ragtown Recreation Area in the Sabine National Forest.

Individuals and families wishing to participate should meet at 8 a.m. at SFA's Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. Participants may ride in SFA vans or caravan in their own vehicles to the recreation area located in Shelby County. Travel time is approximately one hour, and the estimated return time is 4 p.m.

SFA Gardens' Reeves Lecture Series to feature Texas A&M horticulturist

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Senior interior design students at Stephen F. Austin State University will be showcasing their work in the "Essence of Design" exhibit on display Feb. 9 through March 2 on the second floor of the Ralph W. Steen Library.

SFA announces Schmidbauer Competition winners

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music has announced the winners of the 2013 Schmidbauer International Young Artist Strings Competition held Jan. 19 and 20 on the SFA campus.

From a pool of international applicants, 10 semi-finalists in two age divisions were selected to compete in the two-day event.

Segregation exhibit to open at Nacogdoches Railroad Depot


The Center for Regional Heritage Research will open an exhibit on "Separate but Equal" public facilities on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Nacogdoches Railroad Depot, 101 Old Tyler Road.

SFA Board of Regents approves faculty, staff changes


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents approved faculty and staff changes during its quarterly meeting Tuesday.

Faculty appointments include Jodene Pappas, librarian II, and Rebecca Parr, assistant professor of biology. Faculty changes of status include Sheila Lumar, from visiting assistant professor to assistant professor of human sciences; Brook Poston, from instructor to assistant professor of history; and William Bruton, from interim associate dean to associate dean of the College of Sciences and Mathematics.

The work of contemporary artist Linda Ridgway to be featured in Cole Art Center


Linda Ridgway's "A Perfect Six" is cast in bronze and will be featured in the exhibition "Linda Ridgway: A Song Only to Herself," which opens Friday, Feb. 8, the Reavley Gallery in The Cole Art Center in downtown Nacogdoches.

SFA hires research firm to conduct public affairs audit


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - A Virginia-based marketing research firm hired by the Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents Tuesday will conduct an audit of the institution's marketing and communications initiatives this spring.

SimpsonScarborough was one of three firms that made presentations to the board's finance and audit committee Monday morning, and the agency's selection was approved by the full board Tuesday.
