SFA Gardens to host seed-saving workshop


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - A seed-saving seminar and workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building in the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St.

Led by SFA Gardens' research associate Greg Grant, the workshop will allow participants to explore the basics of saving vegetable and flower seeds, including seed development, harvesting, cleaning and storage. They also will learn the different categories of seed treatment in order to promote germination.

SFA's online Master of Science in human sciences offers flexible education


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - In 2003, Stephen F. Austin State University's School of Human Sciences was among the first to offer an online Master of Science in human sciences. Today, the program continues to have impact.

"This program was one of the first of its kind," said Dr. Lynda Martin, director of SFA's School of Human Sciences. "Most universities offered only face-to-face programs, but after many stakeholders expressed their interest in an online program, we began to address the need."

Watercolor East Texas show opens July 30


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The 32nd Watercolor East Texas juried exhibition will open with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 30, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

This year's juror is Ann Bell, a full-time professional artist for more than 30 years. Bell, who is a member of the Visual Arts Alliance and Women in the Visual and Literary Arts, has a studio in Houston and teaches a business of art class that covers websites, pricing, publicity and marketing art.

SFA's Music Prep to offer Piano Safari Camp


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Music Preparatory Division in the School of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University will offer Piano Safari Camp Monday through Friday, Aug. 1 through 5.

Taught by Dr. Mario Ajero, associate professor of piano at SFA, the class will meet for one hour each day in Room 223 of the Boynton Building on the SFA campus. The camp, which is limited to 10 participants, is for beginning students with no piano experience in the first through third grades.

SFA mass communication students meet with European publishing agencies


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - A group of Stephen F. Austin State University mass communication students recently spent two weeks in Europe meeting with high-profile journalism and media agencies in London and Paris.

Participants were accompanied on the trip by Dr. John Hendricks, chair of the Department of Mass Communication, and Dr. Linda Bond, associate professor of mass communication.

12X12 silent bidding continues through Saturday


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Only a few days are left for silent bidding on artwork for this year's 12X12 scholarship fundraiser of the Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University.

The silent auction features 12-by-12-inch pieces created by approximately 70 artists from Nacogdoches, Lufkin and other areas of East Texas. The art is on display in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches. Anyone may silently bid on the pieces. Bidding will continue until Saturday evening, July 16.
