SFA to launch new bachelor's degree in data analytics


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University will launch a bachelor's degree in data analytics in the spring of 2019, preparing students to fill jobs that meet the expanding data management needs of business and industry.

According to SFA faculty members, the program is one of only a few that exist throughout the state.

SFA College of Sciences and Mathematics receives donation for coding camp


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Representatives from BPX Energy recently presented a donation to Stephen F. Austin State University’s College of Sciences and Mathematics for the development of the Ladyjacks Who Code camp, launching in the summer of 2019.

Hosted by the college, the STEM Research and Learning Center and the Department of Computer Science, the camp is designed to create engaging experiences for students who have completed sixth or seventh grade, blending both online and “unplugged” experiences.

SFA’s SummerStage Festival to feature popular favorites


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The school year is winding down, and East Texas residents are making plans for summer vacations and entertainment opportunities for their families. Among those plans should be visiting the Stephen F. Austin State University campus to enjoy the annual SummerStage Festival presented by the SFA School of Theatre.

This year’s festival runs June 27 through July 12 and features the musical comedy “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” and the beloved children’s story “The Reluctant Dragon.” The festival is sponsored in part by Tipton-Ford-Lincoln.

SFA’s Chapa to perform works by Schubert, Mendelssohn, Sparke


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present a faculty recital featuring Dr. Daniel Chapa, instructor of low brass at SFA, along with collaborative pianist Hyun Ji Oh at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

U.S. Army School of Music Woodwind Quintet to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music and its Friends of Music Concert Series will present the U.S. Army School of Music Woodwind Quintet in a recital at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The program contains works arranged for the SFA performance and classic woodwind quintet pieces, according to Lee Goodhew, associate professor of bassoon at SFA.

SFA Faculty Brass Quintet to perform classic jazz, popular music


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Faculty Brass Quintet at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform a concert of classic jazz and popular music when the ensemble presents “Pop Goes the Brass” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Shaltis to present solo timpani recital at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music and its Friends of Music Concert Series will present William M. Shaltis in a solo timpani recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Shaltis is assistant professor of percussion at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, University of Memphis, and principal timpanist of the New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra.

His program at SFA will feature works by Andrew Beall, Jeffrey Peyton, Jarryd Elias and others.

SFA children's series presents 'I Have a Dream'


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Children's Performing Arts Series at Stephen F. Austin State University will present two performances of the uplifting "I Have a Dream" on Friday, Feb. 1, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.
