Texas National exhibition showing through Blueberry Festival weekend


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Time is running out on opportunities to view this year’s Texas National exhibition at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

Jennifer Garza-Cuen, an artist from Reno, Nevada, was selected as having the winning entry in the 2019 Texas National Competition and Exhibition at Stephen F. Austin State University. An SFA art graduate student was also among the top honorees.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Determination and the Lumberjack spirit seem to run in the family for Heather Dulin, a 2009 Stephen F. Austin State University graduate whose great-grandmother, Ibby Inez Fuller, attended SFA during the university’s infancy.
 

Violin, viola beginner class added to Music Prep summer lineup


The Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music has added a beginner violin and viola class to its summer program offerings.

Taught by Alba Madrid, the class is for students ages 9 through 14 who will learn the basics of playing violin or viola, reading music and making fun with musical friends, according to Pat Barnett, Music Prep director.

The class is from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays June 4 through 27 and is limited to 10 students. Tuition is $100, and instruments may be rented.

SFA student to compete in College National Finals Rodeo


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Kasen McCall, a freshman agribusiness major, will represent Stephen F. Austin State University in the team roping event at the 2019 College National Finals Rodeo June 9 through 15, in Casper, Wyoming.

SFA art, theatre students to participate in Blueberry Festival


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Activities in and around The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House on June 8 will add to the traditional food, fun and festivities of the annual Texas Blueberry Festival with Stephen F. Austin State University’s art and theatre students showcasing their talents as part of the day’s festivities.

Students from the School of Theatre dressed as popular characters from fairy tales and children’s stories will again greet those attending this year’s downtown event as they promote the upcoming SFA SummerStage Festival.

SFA to screen ‘Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story” at 7 p.m. Friday, June 7, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Directed by Alexandra Dean, “Bombshell” brings to light the story of an unusual and accomplished woman, spurned as too beautiful to be smart, but a role model to this day.

SFA’s Summer Art Academy registration underway


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Registration is underway for the annual Summer Art Academy offered by the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art for the two-week camp that will meet Monday through Friday, June 10 through 21, on the SFA campus.

Students going into kindergarten through sixth grade may enroll in classes that include drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics and more.

This year’s academy director is Dr. Maggie Leysath, professor of art education at SFA.

Hogg Foundation grant provides real-world experiences for SFA students, helps address mental health needs of community


Through a $410,000 Hogg Foundation for Mental Health grant, students in Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Social Work and Department of Languages, Cultures and Communication pulled their collective knowledge, skills and resources to involve Nacogdoches County residents in addressing their own mental health needs.
 

Senior SFA human development and family studies student recognized with national award


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Jaycie Case, a senior human development and family studies major at Stephen F. Austin State University, was recently recognized by the National Council on Family Relations for her “exceptional accomplishments and involvement in scholarship, leadership and community service in family science,” according to the NCFR.

Dr. Jennifer Newquist, assistant professor in SFA’s School of Human Sciences, nominated Case for the NCFR Honors Student Recognition, which is a national award.

SFA art students to host open studios event, ceramics sale


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Graduate students in the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will host an open studios event and ceramics sale for the public and SFA community on Tuesday, Dec. 11, in the art buildings off of Wilson Drive.

Open studios events allow the public to view artists' working spaces as well as recent and in-progress work. Students will be available to talk with visitors and answer questions, and some artists will have works for sale. Graduate studios are located in both the upper and lower SFA art buildings.
