‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ closes Friday


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The School of Theatre at Stephen F. Austin State University concludes its SummerStage Festival on Friday. The final performances of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 11, and 2 p.m. Friday, July 12. With music and lyrics by William Finn and book by Rachel Sheinkin, the show features, from left, Nacogdoches senior Alexis “Alli” Beck, McKinney sophomore Carson Cook, Nacogdoches senior Caitlin Edwards, and Wichita Falls sophomore Shelby Miller as sixth graders who make their way through a spelling competition.

SFA SummerStage Festival’s ‘The Reluctant Dragon’ concludes this week


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – “The Reluctant Dragon” will conclude its SummerStage Festival run at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 12, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus. The children’s musical features El Campo sophomore Cameron Wall as Glaston (right) and Nacogdoches senior Alexis Beck and Katy sophomore Erik Brockman as the Dragon. General admission tickets are $8. SFA Gardens’ Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series to feature Twinwood Farms president


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 11, in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

Jonathan Judice, president of Twinwood Farms in Spring, will present “Tips and Tricks for Planting the Right Tree in the Right Way in the Right Spot.”

Stephen F. Austin State University holds iMAS Academy


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Students participating in a recent Stephen F. Austin State University science academy spent the week learning to charge cell phones with fruits and vegetables, assessing the geological stability of houses, solving crimes through computer coding, building rockets and designing vehicle collision safety systems.

Registration still open for Kids Piano Camp at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Registration is still underway for the Kids Summer Piano Camp presented by the Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music.

Directed by Dr. Mario Ajero, professor of piano at SFA, the camp is from 10 a.m. to noon July 15 through 18 in the piano lab (Room 223) in the Boynton Building on the SFA campus. The camp is for first- through third-grade students, and no previous experience is necessary.

Austin State University presents its SummerStage Festival, featuring “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” running Wednesday, July 3, through Friday, July 12, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus. With music and lyrics by William Finn and book by Rachel Sheinkin, the show is about an eclectic group of sixth graders who make their way through a spelling competition where each reveals his/her hopes, struggles and passions through songs.

‘The Reluctant Dragon’ to open SFA’s SummerStage Festival


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Area residents are seeing SummerStage everywhere!

Stephen F. Austin State University theatre students involved in the School of Theatre’s SummerStage Festival have entertained young and old at East Texas libraries and at the Texas Blueberry Festival in downtown Nacogdoches. SummerStage posters are all over town. Ads and feature articles are in local newspapers. Students interviews have been heard on area radio stations.

Annual 12x12 event raises funds for SFA art scholarships, grants


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Work is well underway to make this year’s 12x12 Scholarship Fundraiser for the Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University another success.

The silent auction features 12-by-12-inch pieces of art created by approximately 80 artists from Nacogdoches, Lufkin and other areas of East Texas. Anyone may silently bid on the unique one-of-a-kind pieces, according to Crystal Hicks, event committee chairwoman.
