SFA Gardens to host Kiwifruit Field Day


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host its third Kiwifruit Field Day with presentations on the growing, research and marketing of kiwifruit.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 20 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building, Room 101, at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

Lunch will be provided, followed by a tour of the kiwifuit field trials at SFA Gardens from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be available for participants.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host its annual Fabulous Fall Festival Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 5 in the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St. in historic Nacogdoches.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Sept. 12 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

Heather Thormahlen-Molik will present “Nature’s Bounty for Home and Business: Using Natural Vegetation for Wreaths, Garlands and Table Decorations.”

OMA, Lumberjack Cultural Association to host second annual Something to Chew On series


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs will host the second annual Something to Chew On discussion series this month in partnership with the Lumberjack Cultural Association.

“The purpose of the event is to have open dialogue that focuses on topics of concern to the SFA community,” said Veronica Beavers, OMA director and interim director of student rights and responsibilities. “In addition to local issues, we also highlight issues that affect society worldwide.”

‘The Great Alone’ featured in SFA’s Friday Night Film Series


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “The Great Alone” at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Written and directed by Greg Kohs, “The Great Alone” is an award-winning feature-length documentary film that captures the inspiring comeback story of champion sled dog racer Lance Mackey.

SFA to recognize outstanding alumni at awards banquet


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin State University Alumni Association will honor four alumni during its annual awards banquet Sept. 6 at The Fredonia Hotel in Nacogdoches.

The SFA Alumni Awards honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to their professions and the community and who advance the goals and values of SFA.

The award recipients are Steve Whitbeck, Lumberjack Pride Award; Cole Tomberlain, Outstanding Young Alumnus Award; and Michael Calbert and Dr. John D. Weete, who each will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award.

Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing to visit SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s DeWitt School of Nursing will host a site review for initial accreditation of its Master of Science in Nursing family nurse practitioner program by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

Guest artist Jesse, SFA pianist Petti to perform recital


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Friends of Music Concert Series will present guest artist Dennis Jesse performing a voice recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, in Cole Concert Hall on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus. Jesse will be accompanied by Dr. Ron Petti, professor and director of collaborative piano for the SFA School of Music.

Culinary Café, Lumberjack Express tickets available for purchase in September


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Fall semester ticket sales for both Stephen F. Austin State University’s Lumberjack Express mobile food lab and Culinary Café will open at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Tickets for either event can be purchased through an online ticket system.
