The Stray Cats’ Lee Rocker to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stray Cats’ Lee Rocker will bring his high-energy rockabilly show and signature upright bass to Nacogdoches to perform in the University Series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Oct 10 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St. Jocelyn Moore, assistant education coordinator for SFA Gardens, will present “Changing Young Lives, One Garden Bud at a Time.”

SFA Sylvans to host Lumberjack Games


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s award-winning timbersports team, the Sylvans, invites members of the community to see if they have what it takes to be a lumberjack or lumberjill at the 2019 Lumberjack Games, which will be held during SFA’s Homecoming from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26.

Dr. Jeremy Stovall, professor of forestry and the Sylvans faculty advisor, said campuswide lumberjack competitions were held in the past, but they have not taken place for at least a decade.

SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs adds National Coming Out Day to fall slate of events


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — In constant search of new ways to highlight campus diversity, Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs has added a new event to its fall semester slate that will celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

In honor of National Coming Out Day, which takes place Friday, Oct. 11, the OMA will host a “celebration to promote LGBTQ+ diversity and inclusion and raise awareness about the community to SFA and Nacogdoches residents,” according to Tegan Mingo, OMA student ambassador.

SFA Lale Lecture to host civil rights activist Joan C. Browning


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s East Texas Historical Association will host civil rights activist Joan C. Browning during the Georgiana and Max S. Lale Lecture at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom.

Browning is one of 436 people who were part of the Freedom Riders, a group of civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into the segregated southern United States in 1961 and subsequent years to challenge the non-enforcement of Supreme Court decisions that ruled segregated public buses were unconstitutional.

‘Lion’ featured in SFA’s Friday Night Film Series


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “Lion” at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Behind-the-scenes work makes ‘The Wolves’ on-stage soccer look effortless


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – When the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre presents Sarah DeLappe’s coming-of-age play “The Wolves” Oct. 1 through 5, two theatre majors will not only perform their countless duties as assistant stage managers, Dallas sophomore Michael Nunez and Colleyville freshman Aubrie Smith will also put their skills as soccer players to work.

Guest flutist Sundberg to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Terri Sundberg, professor of flute at the University of North Texas College of Music and a member of the Crested Butte Opera Orchestra and Crested Butte Festival Symphony Orchestra, will perform a guest recital at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

SFA School of Human Sciences students lead Cooking Matters program for fifth year


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A partnership between Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Human Sciences and the East Texas Food Bank in Tyler aims to curb high levels of food insecurity in East Texas through a six-week Cooking Matters program.
