SFA College of Fine Arts’ Dean’s Circle celebrates 10 years


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Dean’s Circle at Stephen F. Austin State University is celebrating a milestone this year, marking a decade of recognizing the accomplishments of students within the SFA College of Fine Arts.

Established by Dr. A.C. “Buddy” Himes when he arrived at SFA as dean of the College of Fine Arts, the Dean’s Circle is an external support organization of community members founded in 2008 and “dedicated, in part, to nurturing potential young artists within the College of Fine Arts,” according to Himes.

SFA to host events in recognition of Sexual Violence Awareness Month


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Coordinated Community Response Team will host a number of free educational seminars and events beginning at 6 p.m. every Tuesday in October in recognition of Sexual Violence Awareness Month.

The events, held in the Baker Pattillo Student Center, will cover a range of topics, including bystander intervention and rape prevention, as well as a screening and discussion of “The Hunting Ground,” an award-winning documentary examining the incidence of sexual assault on college campuses.   

SFA’s Guenther, Petti to perform ‘Poems and Dragons’ program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Christina Guenther and Ron Petti, faculty members in the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music, will present the recital “Poems and Dragons” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus as a feature of the SFA Friends of Music Concert Series.

Guenther, professor of flute, and Petti, professor and director of accompanying at SFA, will present a program of music by Charles Griffes, Jennifer Higdon, Eric Ewazen and Howard Buss – all American composers.

Stone Fort Museum to host two maker workshops


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Stone Fort Museum will host two maker workshops in October as part of the Nacogdoches Public Library’s Big Read campaign.

The workshops blend the history of everyday carry, on display in the museum’s current “Pocket, Purse and Pack: Digging into Every Day Carry” exhibit that will run through May 2019, with the everyday carry of the post-apocalyptic future envisioned in Emily St. John Mandel’s novel, “Station Eleven.”

Award-winning jazz legend Branford Marsalis to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A sold-out auditorium is anticipated for “An Evening with Branford Marsalis” when the College of Fine Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University presents the jazz great in an Encore Event performance at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

SFA’s online master’s degree in early childhood education ranked third most affordable in nation


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University's online master's degree program in early childhood education has been ranked the third most affordable online program in the nation by Grad School Hub, a website dedicated to helping students find the best graduate degrees nationwide.

Site editors used the National Center for Education Statistics to research the best graduate programs in the U.S. Tuition rates, gainful employment disclosures and outcome measures were analyzed in determining the ranking.

SFA’s Percussion Ensemble to perform diverse concert selections


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Percussion Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will present its first concert of the fall semester at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The diverse program includes works by Dr. Brad Meyer, director of the SFA percussion studio and the Percussion Ensemble, Steve Reich, Jacob Druckman, Nick Werth, Joe Moore, Eric Sammut and Joseph Aiello.

SFA’s Orchestra of the Pines presents season opening concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Orchestra of the Pines at Stephen F. Austin State University will present its season opening concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Pierre-Alain Chevalier will debut as the orchestra’s new music director, and he has selected a program that features works by Richard Wagner, Edward Gregson and Ludwig van Beethoven.

SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs to host Brave Space Series discussion


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Office of Multicultural Affairs at Stephen F. Austin State University will host its first Brave Space Series of the fall semester at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Multimedia Room. The series’ discussion will focus on the Latinx community and culture.

SFA timbersports team wins second annual Lumberjack Match


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Members of the Stephen F. Austin State University timbersports team, the Sylvans, personified the university’s mascot during the second annual Lumberjack Match held at the Ouachita County Fair in Camden, Arkansas.

During the Lumberjack Match, participating universities competed in a range of traditional timbersport events, such as crosscut sawing, bowsawing, log chopping, and axe and knife throwing.
