Prize-winning artist Birmingham to perform concert at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – “Young Talent” is the program theme when guest artist Blake Birmingham performs a euphonium recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

Featuring Birmingham performing pieces from the 2018 and 2019 Leonard Falcone Euphonium and Tuba Competition, the program will also showcase the talents of Hyun Ji Oh, piano accompanist at SFA, and Dr. Danny Chapa, low brass faculty in the School of Music.

Office of Multicultural Affairs moves spring events to virtual formats


Hoping to continue providing the campus community with an outlet for open discussion in such trying times, the Office of Multicultural Affairs staff members have transitioned the remainder of the OMA’s spring semester events to virtual and online formats.

“We had already begun discussing adjusting some of our programs and events to be tailored to an online format,” said Jalon Berry, OMA assistant director. “Although this transition came sooner than expected, we are glad we are able to promote diversity and inclusion digitally.”

SFA student teachers extend online lessons in response to demand, local stay-at-home order


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Amid new city and county stay-at-home orders to help slow the spread of COVID-19, Stephen F. Austin State University student teachers are still helping children in the Nacogdoches Independent School District learn.

Student teachers in SFA’s Community Responsiveness and Engaged Advocacy in Teacher Education program, or C.R.E.A.T.E., have planned live activity lessons from 2 to 3 p.m. CDT on Mondays and 10 to 11 a.m. CDT on Wednesdays via Zoom through May 6.

SFA alumna named among Best New Poets of 2018


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Tennessee Hill, a recent Stephen F. Austin State University graduate, was recognized for her poem, “Stripling’s Florist Pharmacy,” in “Best New Poets of 2018,” an annual anthology of 50 poems from emerging writers published by the University of Virginia Press.

The poem was included in Hill’s senior thesis for her Bachelor of Fine Arts in creative writing. It was inspired by the Nacogdoches floral shop she passed daily on her way to class.

Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Agriculture receives grant


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Agriculture received a $3,000 student recruiting grant from the U.S. Poultry Foundation during the 2018 International Poultry Expo held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Hristov, Hu to present violin, piano guest recital at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Guest artists Miraslov Hristov and Chih-Long Hu will present a violin and piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, in Cole Concert Hall at Stephen F. Austin State University.

The performance is part of the SFA Friends of Music Concert Series and will showcase some of the great standard chamber works for violin and piano, including pieces from the Classical, Romantic, and 20th century periods, according to Jennifer Dalmas, associate professor of violin and viola in the SFA School of Music.

SFA screening: ‘Cuba and the Cameraman’ shows country’s journey since 1970s


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary “Cuba and the Cameraman” at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Behind the scenes of ‘Sweat’: Faculty, students commit long hours toward play’s success


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Working late night and weekend hours is predictable for theatre students for several weeks weeks leading up to presenting a play.

But the tiring work is also rewarding for students in the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre, especially when presenting a play like Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage’s “Sweat.”

SFA community nutrition students to lead Cooking Matters program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Representatives from the East Texas Food Bank in Tyler recently visited Stephen F. Austin State University to kick off a six-week Cooking Matters program in Nacogdoches.

This is the fourth year SFA’s School of Human Sciences has partnered with the food bank to provide this informative and interactive program to the community. Justin Pelham, food, nutrition and dietetics clinical instructor at SFA, is using this program as a class project to provide an opportunity for students to showcase their skills in a real-world setting.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — As she sat in the pew listening to the sermon, her ears suddenly perked up as the preacher shared an alarmingly high statistic about the number of orphans. This statistic made her mind spin with questions, thoughts and concerns.
