SFA Press publication edited by English and creative writing chair wins prestigious award


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A publication edited by Dr. Mark Sanders, Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of English and Creative Writing chair and professor, and published by the SFA Press recently won the 2016 Nebraska Book Awards competition in the anthology category.

“Receiving the award is a tremendous honor,” Sanders said. “My creative roots are in Nebraska and the Plains, so this award is an affirmation that I remain a part of that community and that my work in behalf of poetry, fiction, nonfiction and criticism relative to the region is still valuable.”

SFA’s Dr. Tim Clipson receives outstanding teacher-scholar award


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Tim Clipson, professor in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Rusche College of Business, received the Meada Gibbs Outstanding Teacher-Scholar Award at the Association for Business Communication international meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The association is an international, interdisciplinary organization committed to advancing business communication, research, education and practice, according to the ABC website.

Clipson has been an ABC member since 1981 and said it’s truly an honor to receive this award.

SFA School of Theatre to present Carr’s ‘By the Bog of Cats’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre’s presentation of Irish playwright Marina Carr’s “By the Bog of Cats” in the fall of 2016 is not coincidental, and it was not selected by its director on a whim.

Rather, 2016 happens to be the centennial year of the Easter Rising in Ireland, a short-lived but extremely significant revolt against British rule, which led eventually to the establishment of the Irish Free State.

SFA students gain experience as dietitians through hospital simulation


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — With a handful of note cards, Stephen F. Austin State University junior nutrition major Leah Wilson sits in a mock hospital room in SFA’s DeWitt School of Nursing’s Ed and Gwen Cole Simulation Lab. In front of her, a high-fidelity mannequin comes to life as Sarah Drake, clinical instructor in SFA’s School of Human Sciences, operates the mannequin in a control room across the hall.

SFA’s Orchestra of the Pines to perform works by Sibelius, Shostakovich


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Orchestra of the Pines at Stephen F. Austin State University will present the program “Sibelius and Shostakovich” when the orchestra performs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

SFA Board of Regents approve faculty, staff changes


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Appointments approved during Monday’s meeting of the Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents included a new associate provost and a new director of human resources for the university.

Dr. Janet Tareilo was appointed associate provost and vice president for academic affairs, and Loretta Doty was named director of Human Resources.

Former East German prisoner to visit SFA, discuss importance of free speech


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Hans-Jochen Scheidler, a Berlin resident and former prisoner of the East German state secret police, will present a keynote address titled “A Former Political Prisoner’s Personal and Historical Review of Twenty-Five Years of German Unity” at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, in the Ferguson Building, Room G78, on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

His presentation is sponsored and organized by the SFA Department of Languages, Cultures and Communication. It is free and open to the SFA and Nacogdoches communities.

SFA agriculture students receive national award


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Zoé Smiley, a Corrigan junior pre-veterinary medicine major, and Laken Read, a Chester sophomore agriculture development major at Stephen F. Austin State University, are recipients of the 2016 Future Farmers of America American Degree, recognized as one of the organization’s highest honors.

Less than one percent of FFA members receive the honor, which celebrates members who have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to the organization, as well as significant accomplishments in agricultural education.

SFA’s Swingin’ Axes, Aces to perform program of ‘jazz giants’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces jazz bands at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform a concert of jazz masterpieces at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

SFA Professor Emeritus of Forestry named to Texas Forestry Hall of Fame


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. R. Scott Beasley, professor emeritus of forestry and former dean of Stephen F. Austin State University’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, was inducted into the Texas Forestry Hall of Fame at a reception held Monday, Nov. 7, at the Texas Forestry Museum in Lufkin.
