SFA’s forestry program celebrates 75th anniversary


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — In the spring semester of 1946, Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College welcomed an influx of returning World War II servicemen to the student body. Among the courses offered to these new and returning students was an entirely new academic program — one that is inexorably tied to the heritage, economy and natural history of the region. 

SFA to host virtual information session on graduate school programs, admission


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — All prospective graduate students and working professionals looking to advance their careers through graduate study are invited to attend Stephen F. Austin State University’s first virtual graduate school informational session.

Representatives from SFA’s Office of Research and Graduate Studies will present a one-hour overview about applying for and attending graduate school. The virtual info session also will review SFA’s own master’s degree, doctoral degree and certification programs.

SFA’s Singin’ Axes, Kantorei choirs present ‘To Vienna and Beyond …’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Singin’ Axes and Kantorei choirs at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “To Vienna and Beyond …” when the choral ensembles perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Under the direction of Dr. Tod Fish, associate director of choral activities at SFA, the choirs will perform works by composers from Austria and Germany written from the early 17th to the late 19th centuries. A number of SFA music faculty members will collaborate with Fish and the choirs.

SFA’s speech and language disorders center receives grant to help people with Parkinson’s disease


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stanley Center for Speech and Language Disorders at Stephen F. Austin State University has received a 2021 Speak Out and Loud Crowd grant from the Parkinson Voice Project, the only 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the world dedicated to helping individuals with Parkinson’s disease improve their speech and swallowing.

Crystal Adams comes full circle as ECHL director


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Crystal Adams, who joined the Stephen F. Austin State University Early Childhood Laboratory as director in June, is no stranger to Nacogdoches, the university or the ECHL. 

Adams is a lifelong Nacogdoches resident and received her bachelor’s degree from SFA in interdisciplinary studies in 2010. She earned her master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Texas at Tyler in 2012 and a master’s degree in school counseling in 2013.

Brass Day at SFA slated for Oct. 17


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The School of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University will host its annual Brass Day on Sunday, Oct. 17, on the university campus.

Brass Day is devoted to high school students of all ages who play a brass instrument, including trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba, and who are interested in learning more about how to perform the prescribed audition etudes for all-region and all-state bands, according to Dr. Deb Scott, trombone professor at SFA and one of the faculty organizers of Brass Day.

SFA College of Sciences and Mathematics hosting evening of space stories


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The public is invited to join Stephen F. Austin State University’s College of Sciences and Mathematics and Bruce McCandless III for an evening of space stories about his father, astronaut Bruce McCandless II, at 6 p.m. Oct. 14, in the SFA planetarium.

SFA’s Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band to perform works by Joel Love


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band at Stephen F. Austin State University will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, in the Grand Ballroom of the Baker Pattillo Student Center on the SFA campus.

Ordaz new exhibition coordinator for Cole Art Center


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The School of Art at Stephen F. Austin State University has announced that Erik Ordaz, Master of Fine Arts graduate and previous adjunct professor at SFA, is the new exhibition coordinator for The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches and a visiting lecturer in the School of Art.

SFA’s A Cappella Choir to perform ‘Always Keep This Close’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The A Cappella Choir at Stephen F. Austin State University will present “Always Keep This Close” when the choral group performs at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The concert title speaks of connections made and friendships forged when working and singing together in a choir, according to Dr. Michael Murphy, director of choral activities at SFA and the choir’s conductor.
