NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The student jazz bands at Stephen F. Austin State University will present their fall fundraiser from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at Fredonia Brewery in downtown Nacogdoches.

“Swingin’ at the Brewery” will feature the Swingin’ Axes, directed by Dr. Deb Scott, and the Swingin’ Aces, directed by Dr. J.D. Salas. New this fall is a third student jazz ensemble, Swingin’ Jacks, directed by Dr. Jacob Walburn, which will also perform.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Human Sciences and the East Texas Food Bank in Tyler are partnering in an effort to help curb high levels of food insecurity in East Texas through a six-week Cooking Matters program. 

Since 1993, the Cooking Matters campaign has taught families and caregivers with limited food budgets to shop for and cook healthy meals. This is the sixth year the university has partnered with the food bank to provide the informative and interactive program to the community.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Moving operations will begin Wednesday, Oct. 6, for the 36-ton Shay locomotive located outside Stephen F. Austin State University’s Forestry Building. Following its transport to Harbor Springs, Michigan, the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society and its partners will conduct much-needed renovations and display the locomotive where it will introduce visitors to the contributions of Ephraim Shay, inventor of the Shay locomotive and longtime Harbor Springs resident.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present the student-directed full-length play “The Shadow Box” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, in Regents Suite A in the Baker Pattillo Student Center on the SFA campus.

Directed by Houston senior Johana Lenington, “The Shadow Box” is written by Michael Cristofer. Winner of the 1977 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play, “The Shadow Box” is about death and dying and explores the end-of-life experiences for three terminal cancer patients.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Prospective students and their families now have three options for exploring the Stephen F. Austin State University campus with a new, revamped slate of Showcase SFA events.

In addition to the university’s long-standing Showcase Saturday, which invites future college students to experience a taste of campus life through an action-packed open house event, SFA also has added Showcase Preview and Virtual Showcase.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – “Spotlight on Women Composers” will showcase works written by living female composers in a recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, in Cole Concert Hall on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

The recital features SFA School of Music faculty member Jacob Walburn, assistant professor of trumpet, in collaboration with Thomas Nixon, piano, performing works for trumpet written by contemporary female composers. In making program selections, Walburn said he realized his past recitals included very few compositions written by women.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — For the second consecutive year, Stephen F. Austin State University’s student chapter of The Wildlife Society was named Student Chapter of the Year by the national office of The Wildlife Society.

“It’s a great feeling of satisfaction,” said Cassandra Kapp, SFA forestry student and student chapter president. “We worked so hard and didn’t think it was possible to win it again.”

Kapp credits winning the award to the chapter’s ability to recruit, engage and retain members despite complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Brian Oswald, Joe C. Denman Distinguished Professor of Forestry at Stephen F. Austin State University, received the Dwight Patterson Alumnus of the Year Award from Northern Arizona University in recognition of the outstanding success he has achieved throughout his professional career.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Stephen F. Austin State University Gerald W. Schlief School of Accountancy within the Rusche College of Business recently awarded the Sammie Smith Professorship to assistant professor of accounting Dr. Stephanie Ross. The new professorship was created through an endowment by Professor Emeritus Dr. Sammie Smith.

The purpose of the endowment is to retain and attract quality faculty to the Gerald W. Schlief School of Accountancy. Dr. Kelly Noe, director, says it will also have a positive impact on students.
