This program is funded by a grant from the National Association of Music Merchants, the NAMM Foundation.
Providing practical hands-on training to undergraduate SFA students in the School of Music, the SFA Strings Project is a member of the National String Project Consortium, whose mission is training tomorrow's string educators while providing string lessons to the community.
Class structure
The SFA Strings Project is offered in different levels. Students from every school district in Nacogdoches County and surrounding areas are welcome to participate. Class size is limited to 12 students.
Beginner class (new students)
All first-year students will enroll in the beginner class, regardless of existing skill level. You'll be assigned an instrument, either violin, viola, cello or bass, according to your interest and the master teacher's recommendation. The beginner level is for first-year students and closely follows the model of public school orchestra programs. A master teacher will model instruction and lead the first class of the semester. SFA students will teach the remaining classes under the master teacher's guidance.
Intermediate class (current students)
Basic skills like posture, hand position, intonation and tone production are refined. Students will be introduced to UIL-grade repertoire and have the opportunity to join the Philharmonic Orchestra.
Spring 2025 classes
Classes are held in the Wright Music Building, Room 170.
