Audition-based ensembles for students in grades 4 - 12
Under the direction of Richard Leppert, the SFA Youth Orchestra is comprised of the Philharmonic Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra. These are audition-based ensembles comprised of elementary, middle and high school aged instrumentalists in the East Texas area.
As part of the SFA Youth Orchestra, students develop their imagination and learn about musical forms, harmonies and instrumental colors being put together in a larger-scale composition. Ensemble participation promotes collective thinking that builds to a more precise conception of intonation, rhythm, style and phrasing.
See Events and Performances for meeting dates.
Performance opportunities
We educate and inspire our regional instrumentalists and provide exhilarating musical performances for the East Texas community. The SFA Youth Orchestra gives at least two performances per semester in various venues around the Nacogdoches area.
Auditions
To ensure appropriate placement and provide the director with a better understanding of musical abilities, all current* and new students with at least one year of playing experience must audition in person:
- Email musicprep@sfasu.edu for date
- Wright Music Building, Room 170
*Current chamber orchestra members do not need to audition.
Private lesson requirement
As part of the program's structure, all ensemble members are required to concurrently enroll in private lessons. This approach ensures students receive one-on-one instruction to foster their growth and success with their instrument while also continuing to be a valuable contributor to the ensemble.
Students who do not enroll in private lessons will not be permitted to participate in the orchestra ensembles.
Tuition and registration
Tuition for each ensemble is $85 for the semester and is in addition to required private lesson fees.
When you register, make sure to choose the ensemble that matches the student's years of experience:
- Philharmonic Orchestra — students with one- to three-years of experience
- Chamber Orchestra — students with four or more years of experience
