An extraordinary musical journey for students in grades 2-8
Through this program, students are given opportunities to enjoy music and group participation as they sing, play games and interact with other students in a musical setting. This choir is intended as a preparatory program to learn skills needed for upper level choral singing.
Choir is not Opera
To promote vocal health, our singing technique does have a classical approach. However, we sing beyond music from classical composers! Our students experience a wide variety of music genres and performance repertoire, including:
- current musical trends
- pieces from contemporary composers
- spirituals
- classical repertoire
- and folk songs.
Students learn basic musical concepts, including: keeping a steady beat, correct singing posture, choral vocal technique, basic music terminology, beginning sight-singing skills and performing age appropriate repertoire. We also introduce singing in two- or three-part literature.
Performance opportunities
The Children's Chorus performs two annual concerts (one per semester) and various community events throughout the year.

Rehearsal overview
We keep the importance of our rehearsal on choral singing, however, students also will grow their musicianship through musical games, dancing and other activities. A typical rehearsal may look like this:
- Vocal warm ups
- Musicianship game/Topic of the day
- Repertoire rehearsal
- Announcements and reminders
Materials needed for rehearsals
Students will be given a folder at the beginning of the semester containing all of their music. They are expected to bring this folder and a pencil to each rehearsal.
These folders will be turned in at the end of the semester. If the folder is not returned, there is a $25 charge.
A parent's guide to supporting your child
It's essential that students who enjoy and participate in choral music be nurtured and supported — and you're their biggest cheerleader!
- Encourage them to listen to their rehearsal and music.
- Bring them to rehearsal on time every week, unless they are sick.
- Make sure they aren’t hungry,.
- Send a water bottle with them.
And don't forget: Encourage them to sing!
