When expressing your concerns, it is crucial to have factual, objective information. This approach helps all parties involved respond to specific situations rather than generalities.
Step One: Informal resolution
The first step for resolving most conflicts is to contact the specific person or department most directly connected with the issue at hand. Select the appropriate options below to view information designed to help you navigate the situation and ensure your concerns are addressed.
Concern regarding staff member
A staff member is an employee at the institution whose primary function is serving outside of the classroom. This could be a custodial worker, an administrative assistant, or the assistant director or director of a non-academic program.
If you feel comfortable, speak to the staff member personally.
- This is the most direct way to express your concerns.
- You always are welcome to have someone with you when you share your concern.
If you don’t feel comfortable doing this or you don’t feel the issue has reached a resolution, you may choose to contact their direct supervisor. The SFA Organizational Chart offers information regarding each SFA employee’s supervisor. In general, the following escalation points should be used:
Escalation points for issues with a staff member
- Staff member
- Department supervisor
- Division leader

Concern regarding faculty member
Faculty members and instructors are responsible for course delivery and the teaching of classes. This includes all of the academic colleges here at SFA.
If you feel comfortable, speak to the faculty member personally.
- This is the most direct way to express your concerns.
- You always are welcome to have someone with you when you share your concern.
If you don’t feel comfortable doing this or you don’t feel the issue has reached a resolution, you may choose to contact their direct supervisor (note: this may be different than the academic department of your major). The Deans and Chairs list offers information regarding each faculty member's supervisor. In general, the following escalation points should be used:

- Professor
- Department chair/director
- Associate dean of the college
- Dean of the college
- Associate provost

- Log in to mySFA.
- Location the “University Policies” box on the home page.
- Select the “File a Formal Written Complaint” link.
