A wide variety of research opportunities
There’s more to the college experience than labs and lectures. As a geology major, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get your hands dirty – literally. Whether you’re collaborating with your fellow Lumberjacks on a research project or helping your professors solve a real-world problem, you’ll gain valuable experience and take a deeper dive into the geology topics that interest you most, from geochemistry and hydrology to petrology, structural geology and metamorphic geochronology.
Faculty research
Our caring, dedicated faculty members are actively engaged in a variety of projects throughout the year, and they regularly attend geology conferences, seminars and expositions to share their latest discoveries.

Student research
Our students have opportunities to deepen their understanding and gain hands-on experience by participating in a variety of research projects. During your time as a geology student, you’ll work one-on-one with professors who share your research interests – and you’ll even have the opportunity to present your research projects at a variety of conferences and seminars, including the annual American Association of Petroleum Geologists convention and a sectional meeting of the Geological Society of America. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in the Imperial Barrel Awards competition.
