NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs recognized 51 graduates of its Diversity and Inclusion Certification Program during a campus luncheon April 26.
Held annually, the program strives to engage and expose SFA faculty and staff to critical issues in diversity, multicultural education and social justice, as well as facilitate relationship building and learning opportunities across campus.
SFA’s Dr. John Allen Hendricks, chair and professor of the Department of Mass Communication, earns second book award
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. John Allen Hendricks, chair and professor of Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of Mass Communication, received the 2022 Broadcast Education Association’s Book Award for “Radio’s Second Century: Past, Present, and Future Perspectives” published by Rutgers University Press. He was presented the award in April at the BEA’s 2022 conference held in Las Vegas.
SFA students pitch business ideas at inaugural Lumberjack Entrepreneurship Competition
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Inspired by ABC’s popular television show “Shark Tank” and a recent visit by one of its stars, Daymond John, the Stephen F. Austin State University entrepreneurship program in the Rusche College of Business hosted the inaugural Lumberjack Entrepreneurship Competition April 22.
The competition, which was open to all SFA undergraduate and graduate students, drew 30 entries. They were narrowed down to six for the final competition.
Dr. David Creech honored for international contributions to horticulture field
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. David Creech, Stephen F. Austin State University professor emeritus of agriculture and director of SFA Gardens, will receive the 2022 Outstanding International Horticulturist Award from the American Society for Horticultural Science, recognizing his decades-long contributions to international horticultural science, education, research and outreach.
SFA Sylvans win fourth consecutive title at Louisiana Forest Festival
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Sylvans, Stephen F. Austin State University’s timbersports team, won its fourth consecutive collegiate title at the Louisiana Forest Festival’s timbersports competition held April 23 in Winnfield, Louisiana.
“We scored 26 points overall, narrowly beating out tough competition from Louisiana Tech University, the University of Arkansas at Monticello and Louisiana State University,” said Dr. Jeremy Stovall, Bone Hill Foundation Distinguished Professor of silviculture and Sylvans faculty advisor at SFA. “Our team did a great job representing SFA.”
Brahms’ Requiem featured in SFA choral masterwork concert
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The combined choirs at Stephen F. Austin State University will present the spring choral masterwork concert, featuring Johannes Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem), at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at First Baptist Church, 411 North St. Admission is free.
SFA’s Contemporary Ensemble to present live-streamed concert
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Contemporary Ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University will present a live-streamed concert at 6 p.m. Friday, April 29, available for viewing on the SFA School of Music YouTube channel.
The Contemporary Ensemble is directed by James Adams, director of the SRT program at SFA. Zach Moore is assistant director.
Wurtz named dean of SFA’s Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts
NACOGDOCHES. Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University has named Dr. Gary T. Wurtz dean of the Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts.
With a 30-year history at SFA, Wurtz has served as interim dean of the ECFA since July 1, 2021 to the present. Joining the faculty at SFA in 1992, he was professor of trumpet at SFA from ’92 to 2016 and director of the Swingin’ Axes jazz band during most of that time. He served as director of the SFA Summer Band Camps for 10 years.
Graduate-level SFA social work students to present project proposal on local youth engagement
