SFA to present two one-act operas

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Works by two Stephen F. Austin State University graduate students and artists from Center and Lufkin will be included in "TEXAS NATIONAL 2009," an annual juried show created by the SFA School of Art that will open at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, located at 329 E. Main St.

Guest horn recital scheduled at SFA


Bruce Henniss, associate professor of horn at The Ohio State University, will present a guest horn recital at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 29, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

SFA to stage student-directed 'The Typists'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present a student-directed production of Murrah Schisgal's "The Typists" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 3, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 4, in the Downstage Theatre of the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus.

SFA Steel Band to perform in concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Traditional pop, Caribbean and Latin tunes will be presented by the SFA Steel Band in its annual spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 30, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

The nine members of the ensemble perform on a full set of steel pans (made from 55-gallon oil drums), an electric bass guitar, drumset and a large array of Latin percussion--or as they say in Trinidad, the "Engine Room," explained Scott Harris, SFA assistant professor of percussion and the band's director.

SFA presents artist and juror Mel Chin at two events


Mel Chin, the juror for "TEXAS NATIONAL 2009," will be present for a special screening of his animated film, "9-11/9-11" on Sunday, April 5, and will deliver a public lecture on Monday, April 6.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - East Texans can learn more about "TEXAS NATIONAL 2009" juror Mel Chin and his work by attending a special screening of Chin's animated film, "9-11/9-11: A Tale of Two Cities. A Tragedy of Two Times" at 4 p.m.

SFA to present Parrs in faculty duo piano recital

SFA to host astronomy lecture and stargazing reception


NACOGDOCHES, TX - The Stephen F. Austin State University Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Teaching Excellence Center will host a lecture and stargazing reception at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, in the Nursing and Math Building, Room 101.

Dr. Robert Gruebel, professor of physics at SFA, will speak on his experiences at the Galileo symposium in Florence, Italy. Following the lecture, a replica of Galileo's original telescope will be available for guests to view the night sky.

Original Cast to celebrate SFA's 85th year with musical revue

Premiere of SFA student film scheduled


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts, School of Art and School of Music will premiere a new feature-length film, "All Good Years," at 7 and 9 p.m. Friday, March 27, in the Ledbetter Gallery of The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches. Admission is free and open to the public.

Shot entirely in Nacogdoches and the surrounding area by SFA film students, "All Good Years" focuses on a family grieving the death of a child and learning how to rebuild their love.
