SFA to present choral masterwork, 'Carmina Burana'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

The scenic cantata, composed between 1935 and 1936, is based on 24 of the poems found in the medieval collection of the same title. SFA's presentation will feature the SFA combined choirs, orchestra, and faculty soloists Debbie Berry, soprano; Bruce Fowler, tenor; and David Howard, baritone.

El Camino Real de los Tejas Heritage Education Project continues with series of lectures


More than 30 heritage resource managers and independent researchers recently attended the first of two El Camino Real de los Tejas Heritage Tourism workshops. The group traveled to Mission Dolores Visitor Center in San Augustine and toured a section of the trace near Geneva, Texas.

Registration open for SFA Summer Art Academy


Summer Art Academy participants and parents enjoy the art on display at a previous student exhibition. The SFA School of Art will once again offer its half-day, two-week program for students in kindergarten through sixth grade June 9 through 20 in the Art Building on the SFA campus.

SFA Music Preparatory Division recitals scheduled


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present a series of recitals Thursday, April 30, through Saturday, May 16. The recitals, which provide an opportunity to showcase the talents and accomplishments of the students enrolled in the various programs, are free and open to the public.

Harp students of Mollie Marcuson will perform at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in the Music Recital Hall, Room 160 of the Wright Music Building located at 2210 Alumni Dr. on the SFA campus.

Award-winning writers to speak at SFA reading series


NACOGDOCHES, Texas-The Stephen F. Austin State University Department of English will host writers Robert Wrigley and Kim Barnes as the department's Spring Reading Series continues at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, in Dugas Liberal Arts North, Room 102.

SFA opens award-winning play, 'The Heidi Chronicles' Tuesday


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS -The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre's production of Wendy Wasserstein's "The Heidi Chronicles" that opens April 28, traces the lives of baby boomer Heidi Holland and her friends from 1965, when Heidi is 16, to 1989, when she is 40.

While the cast admits it is a challenge to portray their characters through three decades, they think the time setting makes the play appealing to a wide age range.

SFA jazz bands to present season's final concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces jazz bands will present their season-closing concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The Swingin' Aces, directed by SFA Assistant Professor Deb Scott, will open the concert with a program that features Chris Phillips, tuba, on Juan Tizol's "Caravan" and trombonist Andrew Klingsick on George Gershwin's "Summertime."

SFA School of Music to honor Dr. Stephen Burnaman at Extravaganza 22

Austin State University School of Art and Friends of the Visual Arts will present an evening of three short animated films at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, in the Ledbetter Gallery of the Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. Admission is free and open to the public.
