SFA faculty members receive national recognition


The Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture at Stephen F. Austin State University was honored with four national awards at the recent Society of American Foresters national convention in Albuquerque, N.M.

Sinatra sound-alike to perform Christmas concert at SFA


Pop sensation Steve Lippia and his big band will present "Simply Sinatra Christmas" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, in W.M. Turner Auditorium as part of the SFA College of Fine Arts' University Series. The vocalist is renowned for his authentic-sounding renditions of songs made famous by Frank Sinatra.

SFA Gardens to host 'Deck the Halls' workshop Saturday


Stephen F. Austin State University horticulturist Dawn Stover will explain how beautiful holiday decorations can be made with items from the garden during a workshop on Saturday, Dec. 4. Using her years of experience as research associate in charge of the SFA Mast Arboretum, Dawn will share easy techniques for making the perfect wreath and magnolia garland.

SFA Choirs and community chorus to present Handel's 'Messiah'


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University combined choirs, Orchestra of the Pines and Nacogdoches Community Chorus will present George Frideric Handel's "Messiah" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

Handel's three-part oratorio, or unstaged opera, about the life of the messiah, was first performed in 1742. One of the most performed and popular choral works, it is appreciated by audiences all over the globe, said Tim King, SFA professor of music and the concert's director.

SFA to present 'Amahl and the Night Visitors'


Last December, Central Heights Middle School student Cameron LaGraff (right) sang the part of Amahl in SFA's production of "Amahl and the Night Visitors." SFA to present 'Percussion in the Pines' concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present "Percussion in the Pines," a joint concert of the SFA Percussion Ensemble and Steel Band, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, in Cole Concert Hall.

SFA Brass Quintet to perform


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Music by composers from around the world will be featured in a concert by the SFA Brass Quintet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, in the Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

The quintet is composed of four SFA faculty members--Gary Wurtz, trumpet; Charles Gavin, horn; Deb Scott, trombone; and J.D. Salas, tuba--and graduate assistant Jarrod Beard, trumpet.

SFA's Original Cast to present 'A Nacogdoches Pioneer Christmas'


SFA students Jonathan Garcia and Hannah Cole present one of the choreographed songs included in a recent performance by The Original Cast, SFA School of Theatre's musical comedy cabaret troupe. SFA jazz bands welcome Lufkin musicians to stage


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Lufkin musicians Dixon Shanks, Sid Shanks and Eric Chin will be the featured musicians during a joint concert of the Stephen F. Austin State University Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces jazz bands at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

The Aces, directed by SFA associate professor Deb Scott, will open the concert with a program that includes the "Tonight Show" arrangement of "In the Mood," Gordon Goodwin's "Hunting Wabbits," and Chuck Mangione's "Feels So Good."
