Texas author to visit Lufkin and Nacogdoches as part of SFA’s English language learners grant


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Project Raíces, a grant-funded bilingual outreach and education program administered by faculty members from Stephen F. Austin State University’s James I. Perkins College of Education, will host two back to school bashes and a Lucha Libre Night, all featuring children’s author Xavier Garza, on Aug. 12 in both Lufkin and Nacogdoches.

SFA’s Griffith Fine Arts Building readies for fall classes, performances


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The expansion and renovation of the L.E. Griffith Fine Arts Building on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus is nearing completion, and faculty and staff will spend much of the summer moving into the building and preparing to welcome students on Aug. 28 as the 2023-24 academic year begins.
 

SFA partners with Panola College to offer interdisciplinary studies teaching degree


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University has partnered with Panola College to offer the Panola Pathway with SFA, which will allow students to expand on their associate degree to eventually earn a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from SFA. 

The program, slated to begin its inaugural courses this summer, is pending approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. 

SFA Gardens to host industry day for woody plants


NACOGDOCHES Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the annual Wild About Woodies event at 9 a.m. June 30 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.
 

Friday Night Film Series to present ‘What We Leave Behind’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of “What We Leave Behind,” a documentary by Iliana Sosa that examines her relationship with her grandfather and his homeland. The screening is at 7 p.m. Friday, June 2, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

Nominations open for the Stone Fort Museum’s 2023 Cum Concilio Club Heritage Preservation Award


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Nominations are being accepted for the Stephen F. Austin State University Stone Fort Museum’s biennial Cum Concilio Club Heritage Preservation Award, which honors those dedicated to preserving Nacogdoches and its history.
 
The award recognizes an individual or group who has made significant contributions to the preservation of East Texas history and Nacogdoches’ heritage. 
 

Cole Art Center receives needed maintenance


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University is doing some needed maintenance to its downtown art gallery, The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House. SFA workers will clean the outside brick and remove deteriorating grout to apply new material and sealant to prevent seepage that has caused some damage to interior upstairs offices. The overhead entry awning will also be repaired and restored to prevent leakage. As a result of the work, Cole Art Center will be temporarily closed for about two weeks.

Patrons donate picnic tables to SFA Music Prep


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Zoe and Ezra Fuller, students in the Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music, prepare to practice outside while enjoying a donated picnic table. Program supporters Natalie Jamison and Haley McDorman recently donated picnic tables to the Prep House grounds, specifically for use during summer camps and other activities of the community outreach Music Prep program.

SFA’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture hosts inaugural Drone Day


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture and the Center for Applied Research and Rural Innovation hosted its inaugural Drone Day 2023 on April 27. 
 
The event, organized by the Student Association of Spatial Scientists under the guidance of Dr. David Kulhavy, the Lawrence C. Walker Distinguished Professor, featured multiple presentations and demonstrations on real-world drone applications from different entities.
