The Art of Rock: Alumnus hits high note with poster designs


From his home studio in Round Rock, Texas, 2002 SFA graduate Todd Slater designs stunning silkscreen concert posters for some of the biggest names in the music industry.

Slater's modern works of art have represented a who's who of rock 'n' roll, from legendary songwriters Bob Dylan and Neil Young to alt rockers Edward Sharpe and the Magnetics Zeros. Through the use of silkscreen printing, vivid colors in each of his pieces come to life, while metallic inks and holographic papers provide textural depth.

Texas National 2013, Patrick Graham exhibition to open April 13

Austin State University's Music Preparatory Division, will be premiered by the Austin Symphony Orchestra in a special concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in Dell Hall in the Long Center for the Performing Arts, Austin.

SFA to present 'Street Scene' on Turner stage


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Kurt Weill's "Street Scene," an American opera based on Elmer Rice's Pulitzer Prize-wining play, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, April 4 through 6, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

The opera, with lyrics by Langston Hughes and Elmer Rice, is a presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts, School of Music and University Series.

TEDxSFA to highlight innovative concepts and ideas


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Unique insights, personal stories of change, innovative concepts and "ideas worth sharing" will be featured at TEDxSFA, slated for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 13, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center on the campus of Stephen F. Cole Art Center to be open during spring break


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Hours for the Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, Stephen F. Austin State University's art gallery located in downtown Nacogdoches, will follow regular schedules throughout spring break.

The Cole Art Center, located at 329 E. Main St., is open from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

'Pen & Pigment' exhibition features SFA student art and poetry


NACOGDOCHES - A collaborative project between Stephen F. Austin State University student writers and artists will culminate in the annual "Pen & Pigment" exhibition, which opens at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21, in Griffith Gallery, located in the Griffith Fine Arts Building.

Popular SFA Steel Band to perform spring concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The SFA Steel Band, also known as the "Jacks of Steel," will perform an exciting and diverse concert of music under the direction of Brad Meyer, director of percussion studies, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in Cole Concert Hall in the Wright Music Building on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

One of the most popular and requested ensembles in the SFA School of Music, the group is comprised of 13 members playing steel pan, ethnic percussion, drumset and bass guitar, according to Meyer.
