NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University students enrolled in the undergraduate visual impairment and orientation and mobility program recently volunteered at See Me Dance, an expanded core-curriculum event for children with visual impairments held in Pittsburg, Texas.
During the event, SFA students Jennifer Anderson, Gail Avey and Abby Blackwell helped serve lunch, socialized with attendees and learned dances alongside students with visual impairments.
SFA College of Education to host second Barrio Writers summer program
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's James I. Perkins College of Education will host Barrio Writers, a free weeklong summer writing program, June 13-18 on the SFA campus.
This is the second year SFA is offering the program, which is tailored for students ages 13-21 with an interest in reading and writing.

SFA's Archie McDonald Speaker Series to feature Gene Stallings
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Gene Stallings, whose name is synonymous with college football, will headline the 2016 installment of the Archie McDonald Speaker Series at Stephen F. Austin State University.
Stallings, who served as head football coach for the University of Alabama from 1990-97, had an impressive record, including the team's 1992 perfect 13-0 season that culminated with a win in the Sugar Bowl and first Bowl Coalition national championship. Stallings was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2010.
Goodall to perform final concert with Stone Fort Wind Quintet

SFA to host Showcase Saturday for prospective students

SFA kinesiology students help administer fitness tests to area school children
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - More than 30 Stephen F. Austin State University kinesiology students recently helped administer a variety of fitness tests to hundreds of area elementary school students.
David Goodman, coordinator of undergraduate studies in SFA's Department of Kinesiology and Health Science, said students in his measurement and evaluation course were able to bring their classroom knowledge into the real world when they administered the tests.

SFA dance program offers academic, performance opportunities

Stone Fort Museum Heritage Preservation Award recognizes Abernethy
Ben Abernethy, Maggie Abernethy-Duffin and LuAnna Cole recently visited Stephen F. Austin State University to accept The Stone Fort Museum's 2015 Cum Concilio Club Heritage Preservation Award in honor of their father, the late Dr. Francis "Ab" Abernethy, Nacogdoches author and historian.
"The award recognizes Dr. Abernethy for his vision and perseverance in the development of the Lanana Creek Trail," said Carolyn Spears, director of the Stone Fort Museum, "and for preserving the historic landscape and the stories that connect us with our shared history."
