NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Still looking for a unique Christmas gift for that someone who has everything? Tickets are available for the University Series performance of Chanticleer, the Grammy Award-winning a cappella choir, at Stephen F. Austin State University.

The SFA College of Fine Arts will present Chanticleer at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Economics Reading Group, led by Dr. Ryan Phelps, associate professor in the Rusche College of Business, recently hosted a video contest about J.D. Vance’s book “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis.”

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Registration is underway for private lessons and group classes offered for the 2018 spring semester by the Music Preparatory Division of the School of Music at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Besides the usual 16-week private lessons in piano, harp, violin, voice, bass, classical guitar, saxophone and cello, Music Prep is introducing early childhood music classes in the coming spring, according to Pat Barnett, director of the Music Preparatory Division.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — “Preparation is key” seemed to be the semester’s theme for Stephen F. Austin State University hospitality students who assisted the City of Nacogdoches’ Main Street program in helping plan and work various downtown events.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Stone Fort Museum will close Monday, Dec. 18, 2017, through Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018, for university holidays and exhibit installations.  

Exhibitions for 2018 will include Y’Barbo’s Stone House and the Stone Fort Museum featuring artifacts John Durst and his family used while living in the stone house from 1829 to 1834.

An exhibit on ‘everyday carry’ will examine the objects of past and present that people deem important enough to carry in their pockets, purses and packs at all times.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Each day for the past few weeks, Dr. Christina Guenther, professor of flute at Stephen F. Austin State University, accompanied by her husband, Dr. Ron Petti, director of collaborative piano at SFA, have recorded a video of themselves performing works that Guenther’s students are working on. The videos are posted to her flute studio’s Facebook page for students’ enjoyment and to help them learn the music.

“I hope it keeps everyone feeling like we’re still getting to be together … at least a little,” she said.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Although The Cole Art Center is currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, art lovers will still be able to view all of the artwork and the winning entries in the 26th Texas National Competition and Exhibition, Stephen F. Austin State University’s acclaimed art competition and exhibition, which can be seen virtually starting April 30 and running through June 13.

The Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents approved a program that will provide additional employment benefits to SFA faculty and staff members. The Lumberjack Education Assistance Program will increase the benefits available to SFA employees and their family members who enroll in SFA classes.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Members of the Nacogdoches/Stephen F. Austin State University Barrio Writers program will launch their online journal with a live reading at 6:30 p.m. this Thursday, April 23, on their Facebook page.

“We are so excited to share the work of these young local writers with the community,” said Dr. Heather Olson Beal, professor of secondary education in SFA’s James I. Perkins College of Education. “This reading is a culmination of a year’s worth of writing for those participating.”

Leslie Cecil, professor of anthropology, geography and sociology, was named Regents Scholar, the highest honor the university may bestow upon a member of the faculty, during the April meeting of the Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents.
 
A member of the faculty since 2007, Cecil reached the rank of professor in 2019 and directs SFA’s Archaeological Field School. She has served as department chair and on the Faculty Senate.
