SFA’s summer children’s show promotes joys of reading


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – When Angela Bacarisse begins to consider children’s shows she may want to direct for the annual SummerStage Festival at Stephen F. Austin State University, a desire to promote and encourage reading is at the heart of the decision.

The School of Theatre professor who has directed summer kids' favorites like "The Emperor's New Clothes: The Musical," "How I Became a Pirate" and last year’s "A Year With Frog and Toad," Bacarisse often draws from personal experience and a love of reading to her own son to make the choice.

Discussion to highlight historical significance of ‘The Miracle Worker’ play


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Audience members who attend the July 6 performance of William Gibson’s play “The Miracle Worker” presented by the School of Theatre at Stephen F. Austin State University will experience a unique opportunity to ask questions and discuss the play with student actors, the play’s director and professionals within the disabilities training field.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Peter Csanyi, vice-chair for international relations and international projects, and Erasmus+ program coordinator in the Department of Political Science at Alexander Dubcek University of Trencin, Slovakia, is serving as the 2017-18 Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence at Stephen F. Austin State University.

SFA students travel to France for Cannes International Film Festival


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Lights. Camera. Cannes.

Stephen F. Austin State University students from the hospitality administration and filmmaking programs traveled to France in May to participate in the 70th Cannes International Film Festival, which celebrates cinematographic art with various red-carpet events, workshops, seminars, film screenings and more.

SFA students worked at the American Pavilion, the center of activity at the festival for the American film community, and networked and engaged in various experiential-learning opportunities.

SFA students travel to National Restaurant Show in Chicago


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University students in the School of Human Sciences recently traveled to Chicago to attend the National Restaurant Association Show.

During this four-day exhibit, students learned from industry professionals through education sessions, as well as sampled unique culinary dishes, viewed emerging field techniques and technologies, and more.

Cole Art Center to reopen: Orton traveling photo exhibition of Upshaw family to ‘retire’ in permanent venue


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, Stephen F. Austin State University’s historic downtown gallery, will reopen to the public Tuesday, July 7, with a traveling exhibition of local photographer Richard Orton’s images of the Upshaw family of Nacogdoches County on display.

Bidding continues in 12x12 art scholarship fundraiser


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Silent bidding in this year’s 12x12 scholarship fundraiser for the Friends of the Visual Arts at Stephen F. Austin State University continues through July 15 at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

The purpose of 12x12 is to raise funds for FVA scholarships and grants that that are awarded to SFA art students. Between $12,000 and $15,000 is awarded annually in scholarships to deserving students in the School of Art.

SFA mass communication students study abroad in England, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University students traveled to England, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands for a behind-the-scenes look at international media.

Students enrolled in SFA’s Department of Mass Communication’s Meet the Media course toured media organizations while abroad, including TV stations, public relations and advertising agencies, and magazine headquarters.

Dr. John Hendricks, chair of the Department of Mass Communication, expressed the benefits this experience afforded students.
