SFA art education students, Boys and Girls Club collaborate to present art show


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The first Boys and Girls Club Art Show will be presented from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

The show is part of an ongoing collaboration between art education students at Stephen F. Austin State University and the Nacogdoches membership of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Deep East Texas. On display will be artwork created as a result of art education student-lead art lessons presented at the Boys and Girls Club since March.

SFA professors contribute to first nationwide mammal survey

Progress continues on Griffith Fine Arts Building renovation, expansion


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Despite the obstacles created by Mother Nature and a worldwide pandemic, construction and renovation work at Griffith Fine Arts Building on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus continues to move forward.

This summer, those passing the building situated on the corner of North and East College streets will see “a building rise from underground and new life be given to the existing structure,” according to Jessica DeWitt, project manager and assistant director of projects and construction at SFA.

SFA biology student wins award for research studying threatened fish species in East Texas


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — For the past nine months, an SFA biology student has ignored unforeseen weather extremes and other hurdles to wade into the waters of Banita and Lanana creeks in search of a threatened fish – the Sabine shiner. The Southwestern Association of Naturalists recently recognized his efforts with the Student Field Natural History Award.
 
Zachary Hutchens, a senior from Nacogdoches, is conducting research to assess the status and habitat conditions of local populations of Sabine shiner in the Lanana Creek watershed.

SFA’s forestry program receives top ranking


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — In its 2021 Global Rankings, education technology firm Plexuss has recognized Stephen F. Austin State University as having the top forestry program in Texas.

“I believe this ranking is a testament to the passion our faculty members share for the profession of forestry, as well as their dedication to ensuring our students succeed,” said Dr. Hans Williams, dean of SFA’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture. “The recognition is especially meaningful as we celebrate the 75-year anniversary of the forestry program at SFA.”

Best poster, paper awarded for SFA’s 2021 Graduate Research Conference


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Research and Graduate Studies have announced the recipients of its 2021 Graduate Research Conference awards.

“We were very proud at the quality of work presented during this year’s Graduate Research Conference,” said Dr. Pauline Sampson, dean of SFA’s Office of Research and Graduate Studies. “All participants worked so hard, in especially trying times, to create thoughtful pieces that add much to their respective fields.”

SFA welcomes Chartwells Higher Education as new food-service provider


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Chartwells Higher Education, a food-service company providing dining options to 300 higher education institutions around the country, will begin preparing and serving meals to Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjacks July 1, replacing Aramark.

Chartwells is the food service provider for several Texas universities, including Texas State University, the University of Texas at Dallas and Texas A&M University at College Station. 

SFA Music Prep offering summer lessons, camps


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Registration continues for summer lessons and camps offered by the Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music.

Lessons are offered in piano, voice, guitar, cello, violin/viola and other instruments. Summer lessons begin on Tuesday, June 1, and continue through Friday, Aug. 6.

Guitar Camp, with Larry Greer as director, will be July 5 through 9. Classes are 9 to 10:45 a.m. for 10- to 12-year-olds, and from 11 to 11:45 for 13- to 16-year-olds. Cost is $60 per student.
