SFA’s OMA to emphasize perspective, perseverance during annual Black History Month celebration


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Celebrations honoring Black History Month, held annually each February, may be especially poignant this year as Americans continue to process the racial unrest that escalated throughout 2020. Staff members in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs hope to unpack some of those events as they discuss Black history and culture during the annual Black History Month Celebration.

SFA School of Theatre to present ‘The Maids’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Rick Jones believes that working on plays like Jean Genet’s “The Maids” is “how you get better.”

“Any actor or director who isn’t a little scared of this play isn’t paying sufficient attention,” the Stephen F. Austin State University professor of theatre said of the final play he will direct before his retirement from SFA at the end of the academic year.

SFA Office of Multicultural Affairs to host first Brave Space of spring semester


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs will discuss self-reflection, empowerment, community building and radical empathy during the first Brave Space Series of the spring semester.

Solo El Pueblo Salva Al Pueblo (Only the People Save The People) is a workshop where participants will have the opportunity to discuss how the power of the people can help overturn worldwide systems of oppression, as well as participate in activities that demonstrate the steps individuals can take in their own sphere of influence.

SFA Regents approve sidewalk expansion, tour new beef barn facility


Nacogdoches will become a more pedestrian-friendly community thanks to actions taken by members of the Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents during their quarterly meeting Tuesday.

SFA will provide $13,282 to the Texas Department of Transportation in support of a pedestrian improvement project along Starr Avenue from Clark Boulevard to Cardinal Street.

SFA regents approve faculty, staff appointments


An award-winning author and poet was approved to serve as interim dean of the College of Liberal and Applied Arts during a quarterly meeting of the Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents.  

Dr. Mark Sanders, associate dean and professor of English, has received awards including the Western Heritage Award and the Poetry Nebraska Book Award. His poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction and literary criticism have been published in the U.S., Canada, Great Britain and Australia.

SFA names chief marketing communications officer


Stephen F. Austin State University President Scott Gordon has named the individual who will fill the newly created role as the university’s first chief marketing communications officer.

SFA to livestream Repertory Dance Company performances


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s dance program will livestream this semester’s Repertory Dance Company performances, featuring guest artists, three faculty pieces and the theme “Vitality,” at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 through 26 and 3 p.m. Feb. 27.

SFA’s Dr. Hans Williams elected president of the Texas Forestry Association


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Hans Williams, dean of Stephen F. Austin State University’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, was elected president of the Texas Forestry Association during the organization’s virtual meeting in October 2020.

“Dr. Williams brings a unique set of qualifications to his role as president at TFA,” said Rob Hughes, TFA executive director. “He has 27 years of experience in leading discovery and understanding about trees and silviculture as an educator. This expertise will help guide the TFA and its members during an unprecedented time.”

SFA biochemistry degree accredited by American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology


NACOGODCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Bachelor of Science in biochemistry has been accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, one of only seven similarly accredited degree programs in Texas.
 
Accreditation by the ASBMB is a testament that the program is high caliber, relevant and comparable to biochemistry degrees from other universities, said Dr. Odutayo Odunuga, professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

When Annemarie Price graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in the spring, she was uncertain of the future. Due to the pandemic, the economy was in steep decline and employers were taking a wait-and-see approach to hiring.
