Associate Provost for Academic Affairs

“And gladly would he learn, and gladly teach.”
- From Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales”

What drew you to the higher education world?

My father and mother instilled the value of education in me and my brother at a young age. It was always my father’s aspiration to get a doctoral degree, but he ended up having to work and never had the chance. In a certain sense, I fulfilled his dream. My mom worked at Loyola University in New Orleans, and so I was exposed as a boy to the culture of higher education and was fascinated by it.

What do you enjoy most about your role at SFA?

Working with first-generation students through the program I cofounded, Generation Jacks. I have seen students take great leaps intellectually, socially and emotionally through this program. I would be lost if I were not directly connected to student learning.

What do you hope students gain from SFA?

Many things, but most of all, a greater sense of citizenship — of civic duty, of the common good, of their role in both their local community and the global community.

What are you passionate about outside of your role at SFA?

I love gardening and cooking, being with my family, and reading a good book.
