An anthropologist and an archivist study enslavement histories — and are expanding our understanding of the past
Story by Christine Broussard '10 & '20
Cover photo: As an offshoot of his Texas Runaway Slave Project, SFA's East Texas Research Center archivist Kyle Ainsworth organized the Portraits of Freedom art exhibition in 2015, which tasked participants with creating artistic renderings of enslaved people using descriptions from runaway slave advertisements. Then-SFA student Kim Rogers '14 created the cover's featured portrait.
