SFA music faculty to be featured in concert


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Faculty members of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will be the featured performers during the annual Pi Kappa Lambda Music Faculty Showcase at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

"This concert is a showcase featuring the talents of our diverse performing faculty," said Deborah Dalton, SFA associate professor of voice and president of the local chapter of Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honor society.

SFA School of Theatre to present 'The Arabian Nights'


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Audience members who attend the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre's production of "The Arabian Nights" Oct. 6 through 10 will find themselves "on an enchanted journey to places far away and times long ago."

The play by Mary Zimmerman celebrates the connection between storytelling and life itself, according to Scott Shattuck, director of the School of Theatre and of the play.

Green is the New Black recyclable fashion show hits the runway Oct. 15


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's fashion and interior design student organizations are sponsoring the "Green is the New Black" recyclable fashion show this fall as the community event for the Blue Jeans Go Green Denim Recycling Program.

The show will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom.

New outdoor kitchen expanding SFA's hospitality administration program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's hospitality administration program is heating things up with a new outdoor kitchen equipped with two grills, two refrigerators, burners, an outdoor sink and a pizza oven.

All of the outdoor kitchen equipment is transportable and has self-contained preparation and cooking stations. The outdoor kitchen is located behind the Culinary Café on SFA's campus.

SFA Gardens to host fall plant sale


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's SFA Gardens will host its annual Fabulous Fall Festival Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. in historic Nacogdoches.

The sale will feature a variety of hard-to-find, "Texas-tough" plants, including Texas natives, heirlooms, tropicals, perennials, shrubs, trees and exclusive SFA introductions. Most of the featured plants are extensively trialed before being offered to the public and are produced by staff members and volunteers of the SFA Gardens.

SFA's Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture to host community-wide competition


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture in partnership with Nacogdoches Parks and Recreation will host NacogdoTREES, a free, community-wide competition celebrating the natural beauty of the city and campus, through Sunday, Nov. 1.

SFA graduate student investigates Chinese tallow in East Texas' microbial communities


Past research confirms invasive Chinese tallow tree leaves negatively affect the hatching success of leopard frogs and other amphibious species. Ray Montez, an environmental science graduate student at Stephen F. Austin State University, is researching the differences in chemical compositions and decay rates of these leaves, which may contribute to the changes in East Texas' aquatic microbiological communities, as well as the broader ecosystem.
