Meyer to premiere unique percussion compositions


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Dr. Brad Meyer, director of percussion studies at Stephen F. Austin State University, will present a recital that features unique and newly commissioned compositions for solo and ensemble percussion.

The first event in the 2015-2016 Cole Performing Arts Series of the SFA School of Music, the recital is at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, in Cole Concert Hall in the Wright Music Building.

Three opportunities to ride the SFA fan bus this fall


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Alumni Association will provide buses to transport SFA alumni and fans from the Tracie D. Pearman Alumni Center in Nacogdoches to three away football games this fall. 

The first SFA alumni fan bus will travel to Amon G. Carter Stadium at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept 12. Tickets will be $50 per person and include round-trip transportation.

SFA offers new safety-focused app


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Department of Public Safety (DPS) recently launched the Lumberjack Guardian mobile phone app to enhance campus safety through real-time interactive features creating a virtual safety network of friends, family and the DPS.

Art scholarship fundraiser to feature Kinsell's original work


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - It's been two years since Stephen F. Austin State University art professor Robert Kinsell retired. Yet, Kinsell's dedication to the education of SFA art students continues to thrive through the sale of donated artwork he gave to the Friends of the Visual Arts before his departure to West Texas.

In the collection of more than 75 pieces, most are Kinsell's work in paintings, prints and photographs, and a few are from other artists.

SFA Alumni Association presents 2015 Alumni Awards


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Alumni Association honored eight alumni at its annual awards banquet Friday, Sept. 18, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom.

The Alumni Association awards its highest honors to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to their professions, the community and who advance the goals and values of SFA.

Former Nacogdoches mayor to offer SFA commencement address


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Judy McDonald, the first female mayor of the City of Nacogdoches and current interim executive director of the Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau, will offer the commencement address during Stephen F. Austin State University's summer graduation ceremony Saturday, Aug. 15.

Tubbs new preparator for SFA art galleries


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Michael Tubbs, faculty member in the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art, has assumed the duties of gallery preparator following the recent retirement of Gary Parker, who worked for the university for nearly 30 years.

"We conducted a national search for this position," said John Handley, director for the SFA galleries. "From the applicants we received, Michael was clearly the most qualified, and we are happy to have him join our team."

SFA professor among 2015 National Project Learning Tree Outstanding Educators


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Project Learning Tree, the environmental education program of the American Forest Foundation, has named Dr. Alan Sowards, professor of elementary education at Stephen F. Austin State University, a 2015 National Outstanding Educator. Sowards is among five educators selected nationwide to receive recognition for his use of environmental education to improve student learning and foster environmental stewardship.

SFA Gardens Lecture Series to feature Georgia plant explorer


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin State University's SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 13, in the Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. in Nacogdoches.

Scott McMahan, owner of McMahan Nursery in Atlanta, will present "Climbing Asian Mountains, Fording Rivers and Fighting the Elements: Moments from a Plant Hunter's Diary."

Music Prep scholarship deadline extended


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The deadline to submit scholarship applications to attend fall classes in the Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music has been extended, according to Pat Barnett, Music Prep director.

Originally set for Aug. 1, the deadline has been pushed to Aug. 14 to allow additional time for students to apply, Barnett said. Scholarship applications can be downloaded from the website at www.music.sfasu.edu/prep.
