SFA Regents appoint screening committee to work with presidential search firm


An eight-member screening committee will assist with the evaluation of presidential candidates for Stephen F. Austin State University. The committee will work with the Dallas-based executive search firm R. William Funk & Associates, hired during a recent meeting of the SFA board.

"The selection of the next president of SFA is the responsibility of the Board of Regents, and in accordance with the Board's Rules and Regulations, we will consider candidates whose names are brought forward by the committee," said Brigettee Henderson, chair of the Board of Regents.

SFA's combined choirs, orchestra to present 'War and Peace' concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The combined choirs and orchestra at Stephen F. Austin State University will present "War and Peace" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

Conducted by Dr. Michael Murphy, director of choral activities at SFA, the masterwork concert features Franz Joseph Haydn's "Mass in Time of War" and Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Dona Nobis Pacem."

OMA to host third annual Women's Empowerment Summit


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Recent gender-based social movements, including #MeToo and #TimesUp, will give added weight to the Stephen F. Austin State University Office of Multicultural Affairs upcoming third annual Women's Empowerment Summit, slated for Friday, March 8, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

Veronica Beavers, OMA director, said that while organizers did not directly address the movements in planning for the event, these and other similar themes will be mentioned in keynote addresses and various breakout sessions.

'Zodiacal Light' recital canceled


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Friends of Music Concert Series presentation of "Zodiacal Light," a recital originally scheduled for Tuesday night, March 5, in Cole Concert Hall on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus, has been canceled. The performers plan to reschedule at a later date.

Brave Space Series at SFA to showcase 'Bound to Repeat'


NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University Office of Multicultural Affairs will present "Bound to Repeat," the second installment in its Brave Space Series of the spring semester, at 4 p.m. Monday, March 11, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center's Multimedia Room.

Each series has a specific area of focus. The Brave Space Series provides a forum for open and honest discussion concerning difficult topics. This meeting will emphasize the ways in which people are often disconnected not only with history but also with one another.

SFA associate dean wins 2019 Western Heritage Award


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Mark Sanders, Stephen F. Austin State University associate dean of the College and Liberal and Applied Arts, won the 2019 Western Heritage Award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.

Sanders’ book, “Landscapes, with Horses,” was selected as this year’s Outstanding Poetry Book Winner.  

Annually, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum celebrates creative works in literature, music, film and television that reflect the significant stories of the Western genre and inducts great westerners into its three Halls of Fame.

SFA to host guest percussionist Shane Reeves in concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present guest artist Shane Reeves in a percussion recital at 6 p.m. Monday, March 11, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Reeves is on the music faculty at Francis Marion University in Florence, South Carolina, and is the principal percussionist for the Florence Symphony Orchestra, principal timpanist for the Masterworks Choir, and drummer for the experimental rock group Yellodrama.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Students selected from each of Stephen F. Austin State University's six colleges and one regional college will showcase their research during the 2019 Undergraduate Research Conference from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center.
