SFA professor, associate dean’s poem published in New York Times Magazine


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The New York Times Magazine recently published “The Still Life,” a poem by Stephen F. Austin State University’s Dr. Mark Sanders, professor of English and associate dean of the College of Liberal and Applied Arts.
 
Guest poetry editor of the magazine and the Young People’s Poet Laureate of the U.S., Naomi Shihab Nye, who recently visited the SFA campus to conduct writing and teaching workshops, selected Sanders’s poem for publication in the Dec. 12, 2019 issue.
 

SFA Gardens’ Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series to feature pecan specialist


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Feb. 13 in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

Dr. George Ray McEachern, part-time horticulture professor and former Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service pecan specialist from College Station, will present “Pecans: Past, Present and Future.”

SFA regents approve fixed-rate tuition plan, student success initiatives


Student success was the top priority in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Board of Regents January meeting. The board approved a number of initiatives aimed at reducing student debt and increasing the opportunity for timely degree completion.

SFA dietetic interns use integrative and functional medicine to offer clients a more holistic health approach


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Food, nutrition and dietetics graduate interns at Stephen F. Austin State University are learning how to holistically examine a variety of issues in different body systems — even if they seem unrelated — to help their clients feel better.

Integrative and functional medicine combines conventional medicine with complementary therapies to provide a systems-based approach rather than a symptom-by-symptom assessment.

SFA art student Burgess wins ‘Forged in Fire’ reality series competition


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Fans of the History Channel’s “Forged in Fire” learned Wednesday night what contestant Kevin Burgess has known for months: he won!

The Stephen F. Austin State University art student from Nacogdoches County competed last year in the “Forged in Fire” reality series, and the episode detailing his participation in the $10,000 competition was initially supposed to air on Nov. 20. But scheduling changes resulted in the episode being postponed until Jan. 29, and Burgess had to keep the results a secret all this time.

Dr. Paula Griffin receives Texas Project Learning Tree award for leadership in education


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — While working on her doctoral degree in educational leadership at Stephen F. Austin State University, Dr. Paula Griffin knew one of her academic limitations was science education. To address that gap head-on, she prioritized the subject for professional development.

A decade later, thanks to a lot of work and dedicated mentors along the way, Griffin has turned that limitation into an award-winning strength and is helping SFA teacher candidates do the same.

SFA music faculty to present Pi Kappa Lambda scholarship concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Faculty members of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will be the featured performers during the second Pi Kappa Lambda Music Faculty Showcase presented this academic year to raise funds for music scholarships. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6 in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

SFA Board of Regents approves faculty and staff appointments


The Steen Library at Stephen F. Austin State University is officially under new leadership as a result of action Tuesday during the quarterly meeting of the SFA Board of Regents.

Jonathan Helmke, who formerly served as associate director of the library, was approved by regents as the library director. A member of the SFA staff since 2016, Helmke earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and business administration from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and a Master of Library Science from Indiana University Bloomington.

SFA theatre students to present Hamill’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – A long-overdue movement is underway to bring greater gender equity to the American theatre scene. The School of Theatre at Stephen F. Austin State University will do its part in furthering that crusade by presenting Kate Hamill’s “Pride and Prejudice” as part of this year’s Mainstage Series.

SFA School of Theatre to present student-directed one-act play


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present scenes from the student-directed one-act play “The Disruptive, Discursive Delusions of Donald” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, in the Downstage Theatre on the SFA campus.

Richard Rogers, a senior theatre major from Kerrville, directs playwright Michael Roderick’s story of Donald, who is awakened in the middle of the night by two peculiar strangers who have the power to change his life, all depending on the color of his socks.
